Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 12: Forest officials have seized machinery, tools and semi-finished handicraft items from an unregistered furniture unit operating at Joda Kilan in the Sippighat Revenue Area, citing violations of forest produce transit rules governing registration of furniture units and the use of machinery and saws.
The action followed a routine patrol on September 10, 2026, during which Forester Syam Sunder Rao, accompanied by a Mazdoor, detected a furniture unit operating under the name “The Handy Craftsman, Carpentry and Handicrafts Workshop”. The unit was being operated by Sanker Halder, a resident of Garacharma.
Following the detection, the Range Officer, Garacharma, along with the HFG, carried out further verification at the premises. During the inspection, officials seized one lathe machine fitted with a 12-inch circular saw, semi-finished handicraft items, one electric drill, one planer, one router and one paper machine.
The seizure also included 10 tools of various sizes found at the premises. The equipment and other items were taken into custody under Section 52(1) of the Indian Forest Act, 1927.
According to the enforcement action, the seizure relates to violations of applicable provisions of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Forest Produce Transit Rules concerning the mandatory registration of furniture units and restrictions governing the use of machinery and saws.
The case highlights the regulatory requirements applicable to furniture units operating in the Islands, particularly those involving machinery and saw-based activities. The seized equipment included machinery directly used for carpentry and related handicraft work.
Officials carried out the seizure from the possession of the concerned person after verification of the unit and its operations. The action was initiated after the unregistered unit was detected during regular patrolling in the Sippighat Revenue Area.
The seizure covers both machinery and other materials found at the premises, including the lathe machine with the attached circular saw, electrical and carpentry equipment, semi-finished handicraft products and assorted tools.
The enforcement action was taken under the relevant provisions of the Indian Forest Act and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Forest Produce Transit Rules, with the registration of furniture units and use of machinery and saws forming the basis of the cited violations.
