Sri Vijaya Puram, July 28: The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has launched a Union Territory-level capacity-building initiative to strengthen the implementation of solid and plastic waste management rules by training officials and key stakeholders responsible for waste management across the islands. The two-day workshop, beginning on July 28 in Sri Vijaya Puram, seeks to build institutional capacity and promote sustainable waste management practices in the Union Territory.
The Andaman and Nicobar Pollution Control Committee (ANPCC), under the Department of Science and Technology, is organising the UT-Level Master Trainer Capacity Building Workshop-cum-Handholding Exercise on Operationalising Solid Waste Management and Plastic Waste Management on July 28 and 29. The programme is being conducted in collaboration with the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), New Delhi, at the Training Hall of the Directorate of Disaster Management in Sri Vijaya Puram.
The workshop is being organised under Phase II of the India-Norway Marine Pollution Initiative (INMPI) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India. According to the organisers, the initiative aims to strengthen institutional capacities for the effective implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, and the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, as amended.
The two-day programme will bring together officials from government departments, urban and rural local bodies, waste management agencies, bulk waste generators, self-help groups, non-governmental organisations and other key stakeholders involved in waste management.
Technical experts from the Centre for Science and Environment, a partner institution of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, along with officials from the Andaman and Nicobar Pollution Control Committee, will conduct interactive sessions covering various aspects of waste management.
The sessions will focus on source segregation, waste quantification and characterisation, Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), plastic waste management, compliance requirements for bulk waste generators and other best practices designed for sustainable waste management within the island ecosystem.
According to the Administration, invitations have been extended to concerned government departments and stakeholders to ensure broad participation in the programme. The workshop is intended to create a pool of master trainers who can support and promote the effective implementation of waste management rules across the Union Territory.
The initiative reflects the Administration’s continued focus on strengthening environmental protection measures and promoting sustainable waste management practices. By building technical capacity among implementing agencies and stakeholders, the programme aims to support cleaner and healthier islands through improved compliance with waste management regulations.
