Sri Vijaya Puram, July 27: Amid growing concerns over recent road traffic accidents, the Andaman and Nicobar Traffic Police have intensified enforcement against drunken driving across Sri Vijaya Puram, launching a special drive aimed at improving road safety and curbing one of the leading causes of preventable crashes.
The enforcement campaign focuses on preventing motorists from driving under the influence of alcohol, discouraging rash and negligent driving, and ensuring strict compliance with the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. Police said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to reduce road accidents and promote safer driving practices across the city.
According to official data, a total of 754 motorists have been booked for driving under the influence of alcohol during the current year. The figures indicate a sharp increase in enforcement activity in recent months.
Traffic Police booked 70 motorists for drunken driving during May 2026. The number rose substantially to 168 during June 2026 following intensified enforcement operations conducted across Sri Vijaya Puram.
Officials attributed the increase to strategically planned checking drives carried out at vulnerable road stretches, accident-prone locations and during high-risk hours. The intensified enforcement was designed to identify and prosecute motorists driving under the influence of alcohol before such behaviour could lead to road accidents.
Of the 168 vehicles booked during June, two-wheelers accounted for the largest share, with 119 cases registered. Police also booked 39 four-wheelers and 10 auto-rickshaws for drunken driving during the month.
Traffic Police reiterated that driving under the influence of alcohol constitutes a serious offence under the Motor Vehicles Act. Under the law, offenders may face imprisonment for up to six months, a fine of up to ₹10,000, or both.
For a second or subsequent offence, the punishment may extend to two years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to ₹15,000, or both, as provided under the Act.
Police stated that motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol will be prosecuted under the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. In addition, their driving licences will be forwarded to the Licensing Authority for suspension in accordance with the applicable legal provisions.
In cases involving commercial vehicles, the matter will also be referred to the Transport Department for appropriate action under the prescribed rules.
Appealing to the public, the Andaman and Nicobar Traffic Police urged motorists to refrain from drinking and driving, emphasising that responsible driving remains essential for protecting lives and improving road safety. Authorities said strict enforcement will continue as part of ongoing efforts to reduce accidents and ensure safer roads for all road users across Sri Vijaya Puram.
