New Delhi, July 25: In his resignation letter, Pradhan reaffirmed his commitment to students, teachers and educational reform while expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the opportunity to serve in the Union government. He said he had taken the decision in the backdrop of ongoing protests demanding accountability over examination-related irregularities.
Reflecting on his public life, Pradhan said he had devoted more than four decades to the cause of education and had always believed that a strong, inclusive and forward-looking education system forms the foundation of a strong nation. He added that he deeply respected the aspirations and expectations of the country’s youth and described fulfilling their dreams as a moral commitment in public life.
Addressing the controversy surrounding the NEET-UG examination, Pradhan said the government acted immediately after the alleged irregularities came to light. According to him, the investigation was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the examination was cancelled and a fresh examination was announced. He also stated that the examination would be conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode from next year.
Pradhan said the government’s foremost priority during the process was to ensure the smooth conduct of the examination for more than 20 lakh students. He noted that the exercise was carried out through a “whole-of-government” approach, with state governments and district administrations working alongside the Union government. He added that, with the cooperation of students and parents, the examination concluded successfully on June 21, 2026.
He said he had accepted responsibility for the situation from the outset and remained committed to ensuring that deserving students were not affected by what he described as the “exam mafia”. He also said no student should face injustice because of the alleged irregularities.
Pradhan further stated that during the re-examination result process, individuals occupying responsible positions attempted to mislead students and create obstacles, an episode he described as deeply distressing.
Explaining the reasons for stepping down, Pradhan said the situation at Jantar Mantar and across the country required a decision that would prevent anti-national forces from exploiting the issue, preserve national unity, keep students from becoming entangled in legal disputes and allow them to focus on their education and careers.
Concluding his letter, he thanked the Prime Minister for his guidance, trust and continued support, as well as the Council of Ministers. He said service to the nation would remain the highest priority of his life and pledged to continue working for the aspirations of the people of Odisha and the youth of the country.
