Sri Vijaya Puram, July 21: The Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS) has launched a new chartered ferry service to improve maritime connectivity across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with the first 50-passenger vessel commencing operations on the Long Island–Yeratta route. Similar services for Diglipur and Nancowry are expected to begin shortly.
The Directorate has entered into charter agreements with three operators to deploy 50-passenger vessels at Long Island, Diglipur and Nancowry with the objective of improving local sea transport and strengthening connectivity for residents.
The first chartered vessel, MV Saroj, undertook its maiden voyage on the Long Island–Yeratta route on Sunday. The inaugural sailing was flagged off by Long Island Pradhan B. Kamaraju during a function held at Long Island in the presence of Deputy Director, Directorate of Shipping Services, J. Gopinath.

According to the Directorate of Shipping Services, the remaining chartered vessels designated for Diglipur and Nancowry are expected to be inducted into service in the coming days.
The Directorate stated that all chartered ferries will operate under its control and supervision. Operators have been directed to strictly follow the existing approved sailing schedules and comply with all operational standards, safety regulations and service requirements prescribed by the Directorate.
The Directorate also clarified that the introduction of the chartered vessels will not result in any increase in passenger fares. Ticket prices will continue to be regulated and notified by the Directorate of Shipping Services, allowing passengers to continue travelling at the existing government-approved rates.

According to the Directorate, the initiative is intended to improve access to reliable ferry transport in the islands while maintaining established fare structures and operational oversight.
The Directorate of Shipping Services stated that it remains committed to strengthening maritime connectivity by providing safe, reliable, affordable and passenger-friendly ferry services across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
