Andaman Transport Department Issues 56 Learner’s Licences at Rural Outreach Camp

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, June 25: Expanding road safety awareness and improving access to essential transport services in rural areas, the Transport Department of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration conducted an Integrated Road Safety Awareness and Transport Service Outreach Programme at Wimberlygunj, bringing government services directly to residents of remote communities.

The outreach programme, held at the Panchayat Hall in Wimberlygunj, witnessed participation from residents of Kanyapuram, Wimberlygunj and Stewartgunj Gram Panchayats. The initiative formed part of the Administration’s ongoing efforts to strengthen road safety compliance while reducing the need for citizens to travel long distances to access transport-related services.

Officials used the platform to educate participants on responsible driving practices, adherence to traffic regulations and the importance of maintaining valid driving and vehicle-related documents. The awareness campaign focused on promoting safer roads by encouraging compliance with traffic laws and highlighting the role of road users in preventing accidents.

During interactions with residents, officials stressed that observance of traffic rules remains critical to improving road safety standards and reducing the risk of road mishaps across the islands. The programme also provided an opportunity for members of the public to clarify transport-related queries and access services closer to their localities.

Alongside the awareness campaign, the department facilitated several transport-related services through the outreach camp. A total of 56 Learner’s Licences were issued during the programme. Authorities also processed multiple vehicle-related services, including vehicle fitness inspections, transfer of ownership applications and renewal of driving licences.

The initiative was designed to bridge the gap between government services and rural communities by delivering transport services at the grassroots level. Officials said such programmes help improve accessibility while promoting greater awareness of legal and safety requirements among motorists.

The turnout at the event reflected growing public engagement with road safety initiatives and increasing awareness of transport regulations in rural areas. The Administration noted that integrating awareness activities with service delivery helps strengthen citizen participation and encourages responsible road use.

Encouraged by the response received at Wimberlygunj, the Andaman and Nicobar Administration plans to conduct similar outreach programmes in other rural and remote parts of the archipelago in the coming months. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to enhance road safety awareness, improve service delivery and ensure greater accessibility of government services across the islands.
