India Pushes for Stable Trade With Gulf Partners After Ceasefire in Conflict Region

Date:

New Delhi, April 11: India has stepped up engagement with Gulf nations to stabilise trade flows and reinforce supply chain resilience following the recent ceasefire in the region, amid concerns over disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held a series of virtual meetings with key counterparts from Saudi Arabia, the Gulf Cooperation Council, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, focusing on restoring economic stability and strengthening bilateral cooperation.

In discussions with Majid bin Abdullah Al Qassabi, Goyal expressed optimism that the ceasefire would lead to lasting peace and security. He acknowledged the resilience shown by Saudi Arabia in maintaining supply chains despite heightened disruptions and volatility during the conflict. He also condemned recent attacks and appreciated efforts by Saudi authorities to safeguard the Indian community.

Both sides noted the strain placed on regional supply chains and emphasised the need for coordinated measures to ensure the smooth movement of goods. The talks highlighted the urgency of restoring normal trade operations and reducing uncertainties affecting cross-border commerce.

Goyal reiterated India’s commitment to supporting exports to Saudi Arabia and the wider Gulf region, while both countries expressed confidence in advancing negotiations for the India-Gulf Cooperation Council Free Trade Agreement. The discussions underscored a shared intent to deepen economic ties and expand trade engagement.

In a separate interaction with Jasem Mohamed Al Budaiwi, Goyal emphasised the importance of maintaining stability and expressed hope that the ceasefire would hold, paving the way for long-term peace in the region.

During talks with Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, the minister highlighted the importance of uninterrupted trade flows in sustaining bilateral relations. He conveyed India’s support to the United Arab Emirates and acknowledged its assistance to the Indian diaspora during the crisis.

Goyal also engaged with Abdulla Bin Adel Fakhro, where both sides stressed the need to restore stability and ensure predictable trade, particularly through critical maritime routes affected by the conflict.

The series of high-level interactions reflects India’s focus on maintaining strong economic partnerships with Gulf nations while addressing emerging challenges in global supply chains. The discussions also highlighted the strategic importance of the region for India’s trade and energy security, particularly during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.
