South Andaman Schools to Train Students in CPR And Emergency Health Response Skills

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram(Port Blair) April 3: A district-wide health training programme for school students will be rolled out across South Andaman from April 4, aiming to equip young learners with essential emergency response and basic health monitoring skills, officials said.

The initiative is being implemented by the District Health Society, South Andaman, under the UT Health Mission-NHM, in coordination with the Directorate of Health Services and the Directorate of Education. The programme is being carried out under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) framework, with trained health professionals leading the sessions.

According to officials, the programme will cover 39 Government and Government-aided Secondary and Senior Secondary Schools across the district. Students from middle and senior secondary classes will participate in structured training sessions designed to improve their preparedness in handling medical situations.

The training will focus on practical and awareness-based components. Under basic life-saving skills, students will be introduced to emergency response techniques, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) through demonstrations and hands-on practice. They will also be sensitised to the importance of contacting the 102 ambulance service during medical emergencies.

In addition to emergency response, the programme will include sessions on basic health monitoring. Students will be trained in measuring blood pressure and will be made aware of blood sugar monitoring practices. These components are aimed at improving early recognition of health issues and encouraging responsible health behaviour.

The initiative also incorporates a broader health awareness segment. Students will be informed about preventive healthcare practices and encouraged to act as community health ambassadors and peer educators. Officials said this approach is expected to extend the impact of the programme beyond classrooms into households and local communities.

The District Health Society stated that the programme is designed to build practical knowledge among students and strengthen community-level health awareness. By equipping students with essential skills, the initiative seeks to create a responsive support system during emergencies while promoting long-term health consciousness.

School authorities across South Andaman have been asked to facilitate the implementation of the programme in accordance with the schedule issued through official communication.

Officials said the coordinated effort reflects a structured approach to integrating health education into the school system, with a focus on preparedness, awareness, and early intervention at the community level.
