Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid homage to social reformer Savitribai Phule on her birth anniversary, commemorating her pioneering efforts in women’s education and social reform.

Born in 1831, Savitribai Phule is recognised as India’s first female teacher of modern times. Married at the age of 10 to social activist Jyotirao Phule, she played a pivotal role alongside her husband in promoting education for girls and advocating women’s rights in Maharashtra. Her work continues to inspire social reform initiatives across India.

In a post on X, PM Modi highlighted her transformative contributions, stating, “On the birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule, we remember a pioneer whose life was devoted to societal transformation through education and service. Shah said, “On the birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule, the pioneer of women’s education and social reform, I offer millions of salutations. She gave a new direction to women’s empowerment by linking it to the fundamental right to education.” He further noted that her establishment of India’s first girls’ school and her efforts against social evils remain a guiding light for the country.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath honoured her legacy, calling her a symbol of social change and human dignity. In a post on X, he said, “‘Krantijyoti’ Savitribai Phule ignited the flame of education, equality, and women’s rights through courage, struggle, and foresight.
