Putin Praises Modi’s Role in Ukraine Peace Push at Delhi Summit

Date:

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday publicly thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what he described as “informative, useful and friendly” discussions on efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict. The remarks came ahead of the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit at Hyderabad House, marking a significant diplomatic moment during Putin’s State Visit to India.

Putin said he was given the opportunity to explain “in detail” the developments in the Ukraine theatre and Russia’s ongoing engagements, including those involving the United States, towards exploring a possible peaceful resolution. Expressing appreciation for India’s role, he told Modi: “Thank you for your attention. And thank you for your efforts to resolve this situation.”

The Russian President emphasised that India-Russia relations carry a “very deep historical character,” underscoring that the content of the partnership, rather than its descriptions, reflects its true strength. He added that India’s leadership has continued to devote “personal attention” to strengthening cooperation across sectors.

Putin noted that as both economies expand, opportunities for bilateral collaboration have widened, especially in high-technology areas such as aviation, space, artificial intelligence, and defence. “We have very trusting relations in military-technical cooperation,” he said, signalling continuity in strategic engagement despite shifting global alignments.

Ahead of the summit-level talks, Putin said teams from both sides had “worked very well” to prepare significant documents, with more under discussion. He expressed confidence that the day’s engagements would conclude with “positive results.”

Modi welcomed Putin earlier in the day as the two leaders began an agenda-packed second day of the visit. Formal bilateral talks, a business engagement at Bharat Mandapam, and a ceremonial banquet hosted by President Droupadi Murmu form the core of the Russian leader’s schedule.

The meeting comes at a time when India maintains its strategic autonomy, balancing historical ties with Moscow while deepening partnerships with the West. Analysts say Putin’s strong public acknowledgement of Modi’s diplomatic engagement on Ukraine highlights New Delhi’s role as a credible interlocutor amid global geopolitical divides.

As discussions continue, both sides are expected to reinforce the long-standing Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership – an alignment that spans defence, energy, technology, and trade, while positioning the relationship for emerging geoeconomic and security challenges.
