The historic Cellular Jail in Sri Vijaya Puram served as a compelling backdrop for ‘Yoga Bandhan’, a flagship event held on June 16 as part of the International Day of Yoga 2025 celebrations. Organised under the Ministry of AYUSH, the event underscored the unifying message of Yoga, promoting health, emotional strength, and community harmony.
The term ‘Bandhan’, which means bond, was central to the theme. The event drew youth and uniformed groups to perform yoga in synchrony, symbolising unity and discipline. The powerful setting of the colonial-era prison brought historical depth and spiritual resonance to the celebration.
Participation from NCC and health teams
About 30 NCC cadets and yoga professionals joined the yoga session, demonstrating coordinated poses that reflected core values of balance and inner strength. Their participation sent a visual message of the role of youth in national wellness campaigns.
In a parallel event in Nancowry, a beach yoga session took place at Champin Village Beach. Conducted under the theme ‘Yoga for One Earth, One Health’, the programme attracted health workers, local officials, and residents who engaged in Common Yoga Protocol practices.
Prelude to the main celebration
The beach yoga event also marked a prelude to the main celebrations scheduled for June 21 across the country. Organisers emphasized that such grassroots activities not only spread awareness but also create a habit of daily wellness among participants.
The International Day of Yoga continues to be a vehicle for promoting both traditional health practices and global harmony, with events like Yoga Bandhan blending heritage, fitness, and community spirit in powerful public settings.
