A&N Marks World Population Day with Focus on Planned Parenthood

The Union Territory Health Mission, in association with the Directorate of Health Services, will observe World Population Day 2025 across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on July 11. This year’s campaign highlights the importance of healthy timing and spacing between pregnancies, aimed at improving maternal and child health outcomes.

With the slogan Healthy Timing & Spacing Between Pregnancies for Planned Parenthood, the campaign is designed to create awareness about family planning services and the importance of reproductive health. The programme is aligned with national priorities on population health and sustainable development.

Awareness drives will be carried out across the islands involving local governance institutions, paramedical staff, Anganwadi workers, youth clubs, Mahila Swasthya Sanghas, self-help groups, students, and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs). The outreach activities will include educational sessions, distribution of materials, and direct interaction with communities to promote the uptake of available family planning resources.

The observance seeks to reinforce the role of informed choices in reproductive health and emphasize the need for spacing between births to reduce health risks for mothers and infants. It also aims to destigmatize conversations around family planning, enabling more inclusive and health-focused discussions at the community level.

By involving a broad spectrum of community stakeholders, the event intends to build grassroots awareness and engagement. With coordinated efforts between government departments and civil society, the campaign will serve as a reminder of the importance of reproductive health as a pillar of public welfare.
