The Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, in association with the Education Department and the Sports Authority of India, will organise a two-day series of sports and recreational events for women on March 7 and 8 at Netaji Stadium to mark International Women’s Day 2026.
The events will be held from 8.30 am to 5 pm on both days and are aimed at encouraging participation in physical activity across age groups. Interested participants have been asked to register their names with the designated Physical Education Teacher before March 7 at 8 am.
The programme has been structured to include competitive track events as well as recreational activities. For participants aged above 18 years and below 30 years, the athletics segment will include 100 metre, 200 metre, 400 metre and 800 metre sprint races, along with a 1.6 km cycle race. Fun events such as a 50 metre back run and a 50 metre sack race have also been included in this category.
For women aged 30 years and above, competitions will include 100 metre and 200 metre sprint races, a 1200 metre walk, a 50 metre spoon race and a 1.6 km cycle race.
In addition to age-specific events, certain activities have been kept open to all participants. These include tug of war, passing the ball and musical chair competitions, designed to promote collective participation and engagement beyond formal athletics.
An Aerobic and Zumba demonstration by participants of the Sports and Youth Affairs Zumba class is also scheduled as part of the programme. The demonstration is intended to showcase group fitness activities and encourage women to adopt regular exercise routines.
Officials indicated that the initiative seeks to promote physical fitness, community participation and awareness about the importance of an active lifestyle. The inclusion of both competitive and non-competitive events is aimed at making the celebration accessible to women with varying levels of athletic experience.
International Women’s Day is observed annually on March 8 to recognise the achievements and contributions of women across social, economic and cultural spheres. The sporting events at Netaji Stadium are part of the local observance in the Islands, with a focus on participation and engagement.
The organisers have invited women from across the Islands to take part in the activities. By hosting the programme in collaboration with educational and national sports bodies, the Department aims to create a structured yet inclusive platform for celebration.
Further details regarding participation and event management are being coordinated by the organising departments. The two-day schedule is expected to draw participation from students, working women and community members seeking to mark the occasion through sports and recreation.
