Water Use Advisory Issued As Reservoirs Face Pressure

The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has issued an advisory urging citizens, institutions and businesses to conserve water in view of the ongoing shortfall in rainfall during this year’s North-East Monsoon. The administration has cautioned that the deficit is likely to impact reservoir levels, groundwater recharge and surface water sources used for drinking water in the coming months.

Officials indicated that the situation is becoming increasingly critical, with reduced rainfall posing a risk to water availability across the Islands. In response, the administration has appealed to all sections of society to adopt responsible water usage practices and limit non-essential consumption to safeguard essential supplies.

The advisory highlights that, as per World Health Organization standards, an average of 55 litres per capita per day is required to meet basic household needs such as drinking, cooking and hygiene. Given the prevailing scarcity, residents have been encouraged to prioritise the use of potable water for essential purposes only and avoid wastage.

In addition to reducing consumption, the administration has called upon households to conduct a water audit to monitor individual and family water usage. The suggested audit framework includes tracking water used for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing utensils, sanitation, washing clothes and overall daily consumption. The objective of the exercise is to help households identify areas where usage can be reduced and efficiency improved.

Officials noted that even simple measures, when adopted collectively, can lead to substantial savings in water resources. The advisory emphasises that every unit of water conserved now will contribute to ensuring equitable distribution during periods of heightened demand in the months ahead.

The administration has underlined that careful monitoring of household water use can create greater awareness of consumption patterns and encourage behavioural change. By aligning daily usage closer to recommended limits, residents can play a direct role in mitigating the effects of reduced rainfall.

Authorities have stated that the administration remains committed to addressing the emerging water crisis and will continue to monitor the situation closely. Efforts are expected to focus on managing available resources, planning for contingencies and promoting public awareness on conservation practices.

Public cooperation has been described as central to the success of these measures. The administration has requested citizens to adhere to the guidelines issued and actively participate in the water audit exercise as part of a collective effort to protect the Islands’ water security.

The advisory reflects growing concern over climate variability and its impact on essential resources. By encouraging responsible water use at the household level, the administration aims to build resilience against shortages and ensure that drinking water remains available for critical needs across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
