Cellular Jail Hosts Mass Singing of Vande Mataram During National Commemoration

Date:

A mass singing of the National Song ‘Vande Mataram’ was held at Cellular Jail on March 25, 2026, as part of the nationwide commemoration marking 150 years of the song, drawing participation from visitors and officials in a tribute to India’s cultural and historical legacy.

The programme was organised by the Department of Art and Culture, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, under a national initiative led by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The year-long commemoration, running from November 7, 2025 to November 7, 2026, includes a series of events across the country to mark the milestone.

The March 25 event formed part of a dedicated phase observed from March 23 to 30 to coincide with Shaheedi Diwas. This period is observed to honour the sacrifices of freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru, whose contributions to India’s independence movement continue to hold national significance.

At Cellular Jail, a site closely associated with India’s freedom struggle, members of ‘Sur Saptak’ led the mass singing of ‘Vande Mataram’. The performance brought together participants in a collective expression of patriotism, reflecting the enduring relevance of the national song.

Tourists and visitors present at the historic site joined the programme, contributing to a gathering marked by a shared sense of unity and remembrance. The event highlighted the role of cultural initiatives in connecting people with the country’s heritage, particularly at locations of historical importance.

During the programme, tributes were paid to Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev, recognising their sacrifices and their role in shaping the nation’s history. The observance aligned with the broader objectives of the commemoration, which seeks to reinforce awareness of India’s cultural symbols and freedom movement.

Officials stated that such events are intended to foster a deeper understanding of national identity and encourage public participation in commemorative initiatives. By organising programmes at significant landmarks like Cellular Jail, the administration aims to create meaningful engagement with history and heritage.

The event concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to the values associated with the national song, underscoring its continued significance in the country’s collective consciousness.
