As part of the nationwide commemoration of 150 Years of ‘Vande Mataram’, the Directorate of Art & Culture, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, will organize a mass singing of the full version of the patriotic song on November 7 at 9:50 a.m. in the auditorium of Tagore Government College of Education (TGCE). The event is being conducted under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, which is leading a year-long celebration across the country.
The programme is part of a series of cultural initiatives designed to rekindle the spirit of Vande Mataram, a song deeply intertwined with India’s struggle for freedom and its sense of national identity. Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Art & Culture) Chanchal Yadav, IAS, will attend the event as the chief guest, alongside faculty, students, and members of the cultural fraternity.
The commemoration marks a milestone in Indian history, tracing back to the origins of the song composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1875. Adopted as a rallying cry during India’s Independence movement, Vande Mataram continues to evoke a shared sense of pride and unity. The Government of India’s 150-year observance aims to bring this legacy closer to citizens, especially the youth, through artistic and educational outreach.
On October 1, the Union Cabinet approved the national programme to celebrate this historic milestone, emphasizing the need to connect modern India with the revolutionary ethos that the song symbolizes. As part of this initiative, events are being held across states and union territories to ensure that Vande Mataram’s message of resilience and unity is deeply embedded in the national consciousness.
At the TGCE event in Sri Vijaya Puram, the Directorate of Art & Culture has coordinated participation from students, teachers, and cultural groups to create a collective rendition of the full version of Vande Mataram. Officials said the effort aims not only to pay homage to a national symbol but also to reaffirm the importance of cultural heritage in nurturing patriotism and social harmony.
The mass singing will include the entire text of the song, as envisioned by its composer, providing an opportunity for younger generations to engage with its original lyrical and emotional depth. According to the organizers, the event serves as a reminder that Vande Mataram transcends generations and continues to stand as a timeless expression of India’s unity in diversity.
The Ministry of Culture’s commemorative campaign also encourages educational institutions across the country to hold similar programmes, ensuring that students understand the song’s historical significance and emotional resonance. By incorporating both musical and educational dimensions, the campaign aims to celebrate Vande Mataram as more than a patriotic anthem, as a symbol of India’s enduring cultural identity.
The Directorate of Art & Culture in Andaman has consistently played a vital role in promoting heritage-based education and cultural engagement. Through such events, the department seeks to integrate local participation into national movements, ensuring that the islands remain an active part of India’s evolving cultural map.
The 150 Years of Vande Mataram celebration serves as both a remembrance and a revival, a bridge connecting the ideals of the freedom movement with the aspirations of modern India. By involving youth in this collective act of remembrance, the A&N Administration contributes to a broader national dialogue on unity, pride, and belonging.
As the island community joins the rest of the nation in this historic commemoration, the event stands as a reaffirmation of India’s shared cultural roots, a tribute not only to a song but to the spirit that continues to inspire generations.
