Counselling for vacant islander course seats to be held on Sept 8

The Directorate of Education has announced that counselling for vacant and surrendered seats in professional, technical, and non-technical courses reserved for students of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will be held on September 8, 2025. The counselling session will begin at 10:00 am at the Auditorium of Tagore Government College of Education (TGCE), Sri Vijaya Puram. Students whose names are listed in the final merit rolls for the relevant courses have been directed to appear in person with the required documents to be considered for allotment.

The available seats include one seat in B.Sc. (Agriculture), two in B.Sc. (Horticulture), one in Bachelor of Fisheries Science (B.F.Sc.), and two in B.Tech. (Fisheries Engineering). These vacancies have arisen due to candidates surrendering previously allotted seats or leaving them unclaimed. The seats will first be offered to candidates belonging to the categories from which they were surrendered. If any remain unutilised after that stage, they will be allotted to candidates from Category-V in order of merit. Should further vacancies persist, fresh eligible candidates present at the venue will be considered based on their merit position.

Students attending the counselling have been advised to carry all relevant documents in original, including educational qualification certificates and testimonials, five passport-sized photographs, and two permanency certificates for sureties. They are also required to produce documents proving their eligibility under the respective category. Officials have clarified that no claim will be entertained from any candidate who fails to appear in person or does not present the required certificates in original at the time of selection.

Courses like agriculture, horticulture, fisheries and engineering, are highly sought after as they provide both academic advancement and pathways to employment in specialised fields. The Andaman and Nicobar Administration annually reserves a number of seats in mainland institutions for local students, allowing them access to professional education otherwise limited by the region’s geography.

The process of filling surrendered and vacant seats ensures that no reserved opportunity goes to waste and that deserving candidates are able to benefit. In past years, many students who missed out in the first rounds of allotment have been able to secure seats during these later counselling sessions, provided they remained present with the necessary documentation. This year, too, the inclusion of fresh candidates in the process is expected to maximise utilisation of the available opportunities.

With the session set for September 8, students across the islands are expected to travel to Sri Vijaya Puram for the opportunity. The auditorium at TGCE will once again serve as the venue where academic hopes are matched with available opportunities. For many candidates, the day could mark a decisive step in their professional education journey, turning unclaimed seats into valuable chances for higher learning.
