The Directorate of Education has launched its first orientation programme for UPSC Civil Services aspirants at the State Library in Sri Vijaya Puram, marking the beginning of a structured effort to support students from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands preparing for one of the country’s most competitive examinations .
The programme, held in the conference hall of the State Library, attracted around 120 students, indicating strong interest among local aspirants seeking clarity and direction in their preparation. Education officials described the initiative as part of a long-term plan to create an enabling environment for civil services preparation within the islands, reducing reliance on expensive coaching facilities outside the territory.
During the session, the Director of Education delivered a detailed presentation outlining the structure of the UPSC Civil Services Examination, its various stages, syllabus components and preparation strategies. The presentation focused on helping students understand the overall examination framework, enabling beginners to approach their preparation in a systematic and informed manner.
In addition to outlining the exam pattern, participants were briefed on the learning resources available at the State Library, including reference books, study materials and reading spaces. Officials also announced that the orientation-cum-coaching programme would be conducted regularly at the State Library for selected students, with special inclusion of tribal students, signalling an effort to broaden access and promote inclusivity in competitive exam preparation.

Further guidance was provided by an administrative officer currently serving in the Islands, who explained the examination pattern in simple terms for first-time aspirants. Students were advised on how to begin preparation, select optional subjects and choose appropriate books, areas that often pose initial challenges for UPSC candidates. The interaction aimed at demystifying the early stages of preparation and reducing confusion among newcomers.
Adding practical perspective to the session, a serving police officer shared personal experiences from his own civil services journey. The interaction offered aspirants insights into discipline, time management and perseverance required during long-term preparation. Participants engaged actively, listening to real-life preparation experiences specific to candidates from remote regions.
The programme also included an open doubt-clearing session, during which students raised questions related to study strategies, examination timelines and resource utilisation. Officials responded to queries, helping aspirants gain confidence and realistic expectations about the preparation process.
The orientation concluded with acknowledgements coordinated by the Directorate of Education, reinforcing institutional commitment to supporting aspiring civil servants from the Islands. Organisers highlighted that such programmes would be continued and expanded depending on response and availability of resources.
The first UPSC orientation at the State Library signals a growing focus on nurturing competitive exam aspirants locally. By institutionalising guidance and leveraging existing public infrastructure, the initiative aims to empower students from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to compete effectively at the national level while staying rooted in the local academic ecosystem.
