The Directorate of Education has launched its first orientation programme for UPSC Civil Services aspirants at the State Library in Sri Vijaya Puram, marking the beginning of a structured effort to support students from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands preparing for one of the country’s most competitive examinations .
The programme, held in the conference hall of the State Library, attracted around 120 students, indicating strong interest among local aspirants seeking clarity and direction in their preparation. Education officials described the initiative as part of a long-term plan to create an enabling environment for civil services preparation within the islands, reducing reliance on expensive coaching facilities outside the territory.
During the session, the Director of Education delivered a detailed presentation outlining the structure of the UPSC Civil Services Examination, its various stages, syllabus components and preparation strategies. The presentation focused on helping students understand the overall examination framework, enabling beginners to approach their preparation in a systematic and informed manner.
In addition to outlining the exam pattern, participants were briefed on the learning resources available at the State Library, including reference books, study materials and reading spaces. Officials also announced that the orientation-cum-coaching programme would be conducted regularly at the State Library for selected students, with special inclusion of tribal students, signalling an effort to broaden access and promote inclusivity in competitive exam preparation.
Further guidance was provided by an administrative officer currently serving in the Islands, who explained the examination pattern in simple terms for first-time aspirants. Students were advised on how to begin preparation, select optional subjects and choose appropriate books, areas that often pose initial challenges for UPSC candidates. Adding practical perspective to the session, a serving police officer shared personal experiences from his own civil services journey.
