Sri Vijaya Puram, July 10: Twenty-eight people, including 17 school students, were injured after an STS bus carrying 58 passengers overturned near Kishori Nagar on July 9, with the district administration confirming that all admitted patients are stable, suspending the driver pending an inquiry and ordering a detailed investigation into the accident.
The latest update issued by the North and Middle Andaman District Administration stated that the accident occurred at around 2.45 pm when the STS bus operating on the Diglipur–Paschimsagar route overturned near Kishori Nagar. The vehicle was carrying 58 passengers, including school students and civilians.
The administration said 28 people sustained injuries in the accident, comprising 17 school students and 11 civilians. Rescue and relief operations were launched immediately after authorities received information about the incident.
All injured passengers were first shifted to the Primary Health Centre (PHC), Kishori Nagar, for emergency medical treatment. The Assistant Commissioner and Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Diglipur, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer and a medical team from the Sub-District Hospital (SDH), Diglipur, reached the accident site and supervised the rescue operation.
Following preliminary medical examination, 14 injured students and all 11 injured civilians were referred to the Sub-District Hospital, Diglipur, for further evaluation and treatment. The remaining three students, who sustained minor injuries, were treated at PHC Kishori Nagar and discharged.
According to the Chief Medical Officer, all 25 patients admitted to the Sub-District Hospital are stable and remain under continuous medical observation.
The administration said one 16-year-old male student reported difficulty in swallowing following the accident and requires specialised evaluation by an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist. He is being referred to G.B. Pant Hospital, Sri Vijaya Puram, and arrangements have been made to airlift him from Diglipur on the morning of July 10 to facilitate specialised treatment.
The Assistant Commissioner, Diglipur, later visited the Sub-District Hospital to review the condition of the injured, interact with the medical team and direct that all necessary treatment and assistance be provided without delay.
Taking serious note of the accident, the Transport Department has placed the bus driver under suspension pending inquiry. A detailed investigation has also been initiated to determine the cause of the accident and fix responsibility.
The District Administration said it is closely monitoring the situation and continuing to provide all necessary assistance to the injured passengers and their families while ensuring timely medical care and support.
