Inter School Football Tournament Begins in South Andaman for Subroto Cup Selection

Date:

The Inter-School Football Knockout Tournament for Under-17 boys commenced in South Andaman with a series of competitive matches, setting the stage for selection into the forthcoming Subroto Cup International Football Tournament. Organised by the Deputy Education Office, the tournament is being held at the GSSS Bhatubasti Ground and has drawn participation from schools across the zone.

The opening day witnessed multiple fixtures, with teams displaying a mix of tactical discipline, individual skill, and competitive spirit. The tournament serves as a key platform for identifying promising football talent at the school level, with successful teams advancing further in the selection process linked to the prestigious Subroto Cup.

Among the notable matches, GSSS Manglutan secured a win against GDMS(S) in a closely contested encounter that extended into a tie-breaker, eventually finishing 2-1. The match highlighted strong defensive play from both sides, with neither team able to establish a clear advantage during regular time. The outcome was ultimately decided through penalties, reflecting the evenly matched nature of the contest.

In another fixture, GSSS RBV registered a decisive 3-0 victory over GSS Delanipur. The match saw RBV maintain control through consistent attacking pressure and effective coordination, converting opportunities into goals while restricting the opposition’s chances.

GSS Junglighat edged past MGIS with a narrow 1-0 win in a tightly fought game. The match was marked by disciplined defending and limited scoring opportunities, with Junglighat managing to capitalise on a crucial moment to secure the result. The narrow margin underscored the competitive nature of the tournament, where even a single goal can determine the outcome.

SSS Nirmala also recorded a 2-0 victory over GSS Calicut, demonstrating a balanced performance that combined defensive solidity with effective attacking play. The team managed to maintain control throughout the match, ensuring a clear result without conceding.

The tournament is being conducted as part of the build-up to the 65th edition of the Subroto Cup International Football Tournament, one of the most prominent school-level football competitions in the country. Participation in such tournaments provides students with exposure to higher levels of competition and an opportunity to represent their region on a national stage.

Officials overseeing the tournament indicated that the matches are being conducted in a structured format to ensure fair play and adherence to competition rules. The knockout format adds to the intensity, as teams must secure victories in each round to remain in contention.

The event also serves as a platform to promote sports at the grassroots level, encouraging school students to engage in physical activity and develop teamwork and discipline. Football, in particular, continues to draw significant interest among students in the region, contributing to the growth of the sport.

With several rounds yet to be played, the tournament is expected to witness further competitive encounters as teams vie for progression. The performance of players in these matches will play a crucial role in shaping the final selection for higher-level competitions.

As the tournament progresses, attention will remain on emerging talents and closely contested matches that reflect the growing standard of school-level football in South Andaman.
