Trump Signals Shift in Iran War Strategy, Strait of Hormuz not Immediate Priority

Date:

US President Donald Trump has indicated a willingness to conclude the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran without immediately reopening the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal citing administration officials.

Senior aides briefed on internal discussions said the administration assessed that efforts to force open the strategically vital waterway could significantly extend the duration of the conflict beyond a projected timeline of four to six weeks. The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global energy corridor, and its disruption has raised concerns over international trade and oil supply chains.

Based on these assessments, the administration has prioritised military objectives aimed at weakening Iran’s naval capabilities and missile stockpiles. At the same time, Washington is pursuing diplomatic pressure on Tehran to restore maritime trade through the strait. Officials indicated that if diplomatic efforts fail, the United States may push European and Gulf allies to take the lead in reopening the route.

While military options to secure the waterway remain under consideration, they are not viewed as an immediate priority, according to officials familiar with the strategy. The shift reflects a recalibration of operational goals, balancing military engagement with diplomatic measures.

Despite the internal clarity, public messaging from Trump has varied. On Monday, he warned that the United States could “completely obliterate” Iran’s electric plants, oil facilities, and Kharg Island if negotiations do not progress swiftly. The statement underscored a continued hardline stance even as strategic priorities evolve.

Parallel to these developments, the administration has moved to strengthen its military presence in the region. Over the weekend, the USS Tripoli, along with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, entered the operational area. Elements of the 82nd Airborne Division have also begun deploying, with discussions underway regarding the possible addition of up to 10,000 ground troops.

Officials further indicated that the administration is evaluating a complex operation aimed at securing Iran’s uranium reserves, signalling continued focus on limiting Tehran’s nuclear capabilities.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that efforts are ongoing to restore normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. However, reopening the waterway is not currently listed among the administration’s primary military objectives. Instead, operational focus remains on targeting Iran’s naval forces, missile programme, defence infrastructure, and nuclear assets.

The evolving approach highlights a strategic balancing act as the United States navigates military engagement, diplomatic pressure, and broader geopolitical risks tied to one of the world’s most critical maritime routes.
