New Tourist Information Counter, Mangrove Walk boost tourism push in A&N Islands

The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has unveiled two new initiatives aimed at improving tourist experience and promoting sustainable tourism across the islands. A newly constructed Tourist Information Counter (TIC) was inaugurated at the Veer Savarkar International Airport in Sri Vijaya Puram, while a Mangrove Walk is set to be held at Shoal Bay on November 8 to showcase the region’s unique biodiversity.

The Tourist Information Counter, established by the Department of Tourism in a 15-square-metre area provided by the Airport Authority of India, is designed to serve as a one-stop centre for visitors arriving in the Islands. It will provide real-time guidance on tourist attractions, travel routes, accommodation options, and adventure activities. Officials said the facility is part of the Administration’s effort to improve accessibility and convenience for travellers while promoting the Islands as a tourist-friendly destination.

At the inauguration ceremony, the Chief Secretary, along with senior officers from the Departments of Information, Publicity & Tourism (IP&T) and Airport Authority of India, emphasized that the counter will help streamline information dissemination and assist visitors in making the most of their stay. The Tourism Department believes the facility will serve as a model for future tourist assistance centres at major entry points.

Complementing the infrastructure development at the airport, the Department of Tourism, in collaboration with the Department of Environment & Forests and Gram Panchayat Shoal Bay, will host a Mangrove Walk on November 8 between 8 and 10 a.m. The event will provide participants with a guided exploration of the mangrove ecosystem, highlighting its ecological importance and potential for eco-tourism. Experts from the Forest Department will lead the walk, focusing on biodiversity conservation and community-based tourism.

The Mangrove Walk initiative also aims to encourage local youth to take up eco-guiding as a self-employment opportunity. Participation has been limited to 50 individuals, with preference given to residents of nearby areas. The Tourism Department has arranged transport from the Mohanpura Bus Terminus at 6 a.m. for participants, ensuring ease of access to Shoal Bay.

Applicants have been invited to register by November 6 with the Department of Tourism. Certificates of participation will be issued jointly by the Tourism and Forest Departments and the Gram Panchayat Shoal Bay upon completion of the excursion. The Administration plans to include additional batches under a structured calendar of events, thereby extending opportunities for participation throughout the season.

Officials said the event reflects the Administration’s commitment to promoting responsible and eco-friendly tourism in the islands. By encouraging community participation and local employment, the initiative seeks to balance conservation goals with livelihood generation. The Department has been focusing on diversifying tourism offerings, from water sports and heritage circuits to nature-based experiences, to attract a wider segment of visitors.

The introduction of the Tourist Information Counter and the Mangrove Walk demonstrates the Andaman Administration’s coordinated approach to tourism development, integrating infrastructure improvement with environmental awareness. As both initiatives come into effect this November, officials expect them to enhance visitor satisfaction, strengthen the brand identity of the Islands, and contribute to sustainable growth in the tourism sector.
