The Andaman & Nicobar Islands have joined the nationwide Har Ghar Tiranga 2025 campaign with a grand UT-level celebration titled Tiranga Mahotsav, organised by the Directorate of Art & Culture at the Government Girls Senior Secondary School auditorium in Sri Vijaya Puram. The event forms part of Independence Day festivities being observed from August 2 to 15 across the country, encouraging every citizen to hoist the national flag at home as a symbol of unity and pride.
The Tiranga Mahotsav brought together an array of cultural performances and exhibitions aimed at evoking patriotism. A photo exhibition showcased moments of national pride, while the Tiranga Mela, organised by self-help groups under the Rural Development Department, featured tricolour-themed handicrafts and artefacts. The gathering saw the presence of senior officials from the administration, with the Lieutenant Governor presenting trophies and certificates to winners of an inter-collegiate dance competition on patriotic themes. Teachers’ Training College (TGCE) secured the first position, Andaman College (ANCOL) came second, and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology (DBRAIT) took third place, while Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya (JNRM) received a consolation award.
The Secretary of Art & Culture highlighted that this year marks the fourth edition of Har Ghar Tiranga in the islands, with 30,000 national flags already sent by the Ministry of Culture for household distribution via the Postal Department. Additional supplies are expected to ensure maximum participation. The aim is to see every household in the islands displaying the tricolour during the campaign period.
Cultural performances featured stirring patriotic songs by local organisations, adding to the festive and emotional ambience of the gathering. The Directorate of Art & Culture acknowledged the contributions of departments, cultural groups, and participants in making the event a success.
The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, was introduced to honour the sacrifices of freedom fighters and strengthen citizens’ emotional connection to the tricolour. The initiative underscores the symbolic power of the national flag as a representation of unity, integrity, and the shared aspirations of the nation.
Across the islands, preparations for Independence Day have been underway, with public institutions, schools, and community organisations aligning their activities with the Har Ghar Tiranga spirit. The campaign not only involves physical flag-hoisting but also inspires digital participation, with residents sharing images of their celebrations online, further amplifying the sense of collective pride.
In keeping with its inclusive ethos, the campaign reaches out to remote island communities, ensuring that geographic distance does not diminish participation in the national celebration. The Postal Department’s distribution plan is seen as vital for bridging these distances, enabling households from urban centres to distant villages to equally partake in the hoisting of the tricolour.
With the campaign concluding on August 15, the Tiranga Mahotsav stands as one of the key highlights of the celebrations in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands this year. It has brought together diverse sections of society in a display of cultural vibrancy and national pride, setting the tone for Independence Day observances.
