Education Ministry Opens Nominations for Prestigious National Teachers’ Award

The Ministry of Education has opened the online nomination process for the prestigious National Teachers’ Award 2025, inviting school teachers across India to apply through a self-nomination route. The awards, which will be conferred on Teacher’s Day, September 5, by the President in New Delhi, aim to recognise the outstanding contribution of educators who have significantly impacted the quality of school education and transformed the lives of their students.

In a circular issued from Shastri Bhavan, the Department of School Education and Literacy has urged eligible teachers to submit their applications online at http://nationalawardstoteachers.education.gov.in from June 23, 2025. The final date for registration is July 13, while the complete nomination form must be submitted by July 15.

The National Teachers’ Award, initiated to elevate the status of teachers in the country, aims to provide public recognition to meritorious educators across various types of schools. It acknowledges those who have consistently demonstrated commitment, innovation, and excellence in teaching. Since its inception, the award has come to symbolise one of the highest accolades for school-level educators in India.

Eligible candidates include regular teachers and heads of schools with a minimum of ten years of service working in government-run, government-aided, and recognised private institutions affiliated with State Boards, CBSE, or CISCE. This includes schools under state and union territory administrations, local bodies, and private schools recognised by the respective authorities. Institutions such as Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, Sainik Schools, schools run by the Atomic Energy Education Society (AEES), and Eklavya Model Residential Schools under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs are also covered.

Certain exclusions have been laid out in the guidelines. Contractual teachers, Shiksha Mitras, educational administrators, inspectors, and training institute staff are not eligible to apply. Retired teachers are generally not considered, unless they have served at least four months in the current calendar year, ending April 30, and meet all other criteria. In addition, candidates must not be involved in private tuition, which is viewed as a disqualifying factor.

The application process is designed to encourage genuine self-assessment and highlight evidence-based achievements. Teachers are required to document their innovations, methods adopted for student engagement, inclusive practices, and community involvement as part of the nomination.

The awards serve both symbolic and practical purposes, reinforcing the critical role teachers play in nation-building while motivating others to raise their professional standards. While the honours are personal, the broader implication lies in improving the educational ecosystem by recognising and replicating effective teaching practices.

The Ministry of Education has advised interested candidates to go through the revised guidelines in detail before applying. Authorities expect a transparent, merit-based selection that filters the most deserving candidates from across the country. The National Teachers’ Award not only elevates the individual but also sets a benchmark of excellence for the profession.

The award ceremony on Teacher’s Day has long held a place of prestige in India’s academic calendar. Every year, a handful of teachers from different states are honoured in the presence of dignitaries and the education fraternity, serving as a reminder of the quiet, often unsung work done in classrooms across the country. The 2025 edition seeks to continue that legacy while embracing transparency through digital nominations and review.
