Teachers to mark Sept 3-4 with sports events at Netaji Stadium and clubs

Teachers’ Day 2025 in Sri Vijaya Puram will be marked with a two-day celebration of sports and recreation for educators and school staff. A series of badminton, table tennis, athletics and chess tournaments have been scheduled on September 3 and 4 across the Multipurpose Hall of Netaji Stadium, the stadium’s athletics track, and the Andaman Club. The events are aimed at fostering camaraderie among teachers while highlighting the role of sports in holistic development.

The programme begins on September 3 with badminton doubles for men and table tennis doubles for women, both starting at 8:30 am in the Multipurpose Hall of Netaji Stadium. On the same day, fixtures will be drawn and participants finalized for subsequent matches. The following day, September 4, the badminton doubles for women and table tennis doubles for men will be conducted, also beginning at 8:30 am at the same venue. In addition, athletics events including 100-metre sprints have been scheduled for both men and women, with categories divided above and below the age of 50. The races will take place in the afternoon, followed by a tug of war for men and women at 4:00 pm at Netaji Stadium. Chess, open to both men and women, will be conducted at the Andaman Club on September 4 from 8:30 am.

Organisers have invited teachers and staff from across the city’s schools to arrive well before the starting time of their respective events to facilitate smooth scheduling. Fixtures will be prepared on the spot, ensuring flexibility in accommodating participants. Teachers have also been asked to contact designated coordinators for each sport in advance. Contacts have been shared for badminton, table tennis, athletics and chess, with officials guiding participants on registration and other formalities. Chess entries are being accepted until 5:00 pm on September 3, after which the tournament roster will be finalized for the following day.

The choice of events reflects a mix of competitive and recreational activities designed to encourage broad participation across age groups and interests. Badminton and table tennis remain popular sports in the islands, often accessible in school and community facilities. Athletics events like the sprint races are expected to draw enthusiasm, particularly with separate categories for those above 50, allowing veteran teachers to showcase their fitness. The tug of war has been added as a team event that highlights cooperation and collective effort, while chess provides a mental challenge in keeping with the spirit of Teachers’ Day.

Teachers’ Day celebrations across India traditionally honour the contributions of educators to society. In the islands, the emphasis this year has been on creating opportunities for teachers themselves to participate, enjoy and build community through sports and games. Such events not only serve as a break from routine but also underline the importance of health, fitness and extracurricular engagement in professional life. For teachers who are often at the forefront of encouraging students in sports and cultural activities, the tournaments provide a chance to lead by example and enjoy the same spirit of competition.

The inclusion of chess alongside physical sports adds balance to the programme, acknowledging the intellectual engagement that teachers bring to their profession. With participation open to both men and women across all events, the organisers have sought to make the programme inclusive and representative of the teaching community at large.

The two-day programme underlines the administration’s support for recognising Teachers’ Day not only as an occasion of respect but also as a celebration of togetherness. By turning the spotlight on educators through sports, the events highlight the balance of body and mind, teamwork and strategy. As teachers gather on September 3 and 4 to compete, cheer and collaborate, the celebrations will serve as a reminder of the role educators play both inside and outside the classroom in shaping communities.
