Tata Trusts Begin Search for Next Tata Sons Chairman After Chandrasekaran Exit Decision

Date:

Mumbai, Aug. 13: Tata Trusts has initiated the process of selecting the next chairman of Tata Sons after incumbent N. Chandrasekaran decided not to seek reappointment when his current tenure ends in February 2027, setting in motion a planned leadership transition at India’s largest business conglomerate.

The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT), the principal shareholder in Tata Sons through Tata Trusts, announced on Thursday that its trustees had passed a resolution to constitute a Selection Committee to recommend a successor. The committee will identify the next chairman in accordance with the Articles of Association of Tata Sons.

The Trust said the selection process would begin at the earliest to facilitate an orderly transition of leadership at the holding company of the Tata Group. It also stated that it respected Chandrasekaran’s decision and formally acknowledged his leadership during his tenure.

According to the SDTT, it will continue to support Tata Sons in ensuring a smooth, timely and orderly transition that aligns with the long-term interests and values of the Tata Group.

The move comes a day after Chandrasekaran informed the Tata Sons board that he would not offer himself for another term, bringing clarity to a succession process that had remained unresolved for several months.

Chandrasekaran, who has spent four decades with the Tata Group, announced on Wednesday that he would step down at the conclusion of his present term despite receiving support for another five-year extension from both the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust.

According to Chandrasekaran, the two trusts had unanimously recommended the renewal of his tenure. The proposal was subsequently endorsed by the Tata Sons Nomination and Remuneration Committee as well as the company’s board.

However, the proposal placed before the Tata Sons board on February 24, 2026, did not receive unanimous approval after one director declined to support it.

Chandrasekaran said that with Tata Sons currently pursuing several strategic initiatives, stakeholders required clarity regarding the company’s leadership beyond February 2027.

He assumed the role of chairman of Tata Sons in January 2017 after serving as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Tata Consultancy Services. His association with the Tata Group began in 1987 when he joined Tata Consultancy Services as an intern, before progressing through various leadership roles to head the more than $300-billion conglomerate.

The formation of the Selection Committee marks the formal beginning of the succession process as Tata Trusts prepares for a leadership transition at the apex of the Tata Group.
