Swaraj Dweep Police Seize 200 Grams of Suspected Ganja, Arrest One

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, July 4: A person was arrested after police allegedly recovered around 200 grams of suspected ganja and an electronic weighing machine during a raid near the Helipad Parking area in Swaraj Dweep, as authorities continued enforcement action against narcotics offences during the ongoing Drug Awareness Week.

According to police, the operation was carried out on July 2 by a team from Swaraj Dweep Police Station following specific intelligence inputs regarding alleged possession of illegal narcotic substances. The raid was conducted under the supervision of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Swaraj Dweep.

Police said the search was conducted in the presence of a Gazetted Officer and independent witnesses in accordance with the legal procedures prescribed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

During the operation, officers allegedly recovered approximately 200 grams of suspected ganja from the possession of the accused. An electronic weighing machine was also seized from the spot.

Following the recovery, police completed the mandatory legal formalities before seizing the suspected contraband and taking the accused into custody.

A case has been registered at Swaraj Dweep Police Station under Section 20(b)(ii)(A) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.

Investigators are examining the source of the seized narcotic substance and are attempting to identify other persons who may have been involved in its alleged supply and distribution. Police said the investigation remains in progress.

The action forms part of enforcement measures being undertaken during the ongoing Drug Awareness Week under the nationwide “Nasha Mukt Bharat, Khushhaal Bharat” campaign, which focuses on curbing drug trafficking and substance abuse.

Drug trafficking and the circulation of narcotic substances remain matters of concern for law enforcement agencies across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with investigations in such cases often extending beyond individual arrests to identify wider supply networks.

Police have appealed to the public to share information relating to suspected drug trafficking or substance abuse through Police Emergency 112, the MANAS Toll-Free Helpline 1933, WhatsApp number 9531856080, or the nearest police station. According to police, the identity of informants will be kept confidential.

The investigation into the Swaraj Dweep seizure is continuing, and further legal action, if any, will depend on the outcome of the probe.
