A focused tax collection drive conducted by the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipality recorded strong public participation, generating ₹34,32,391 in municipal taxes during a single-day campaign held at two locations in the town. The initiative, which aimed to simplify tax payments and bring services closer to residents, was conducted at the Atlanta community hall and the sanitary site office near Murugan Temple in Ward 5.
Municipal officials stated that the drive was part of ongoing efforts to streamline revenue collection and encourage citizens to clear dues ahead of the financial year-end cycle. The response, they said, reflected increasing awareness among residents about the importance of timely tax payments in supporting local infrastructure, sanitation, and civic amenities. With multiple civic works underway and others expected to be taken up in the coming months, the municipality has been attempting to create more accessible points of interaction for taxpayers.
The decision to conduct special drives at neighbourhood-level venues was taken to reduce congestion at the main municipal office and reach residents who might otherwise postpone payments due to time constraints. By organising temporary collection centres closer to residential clusters, officials hoped to widen participation and ease the experience for households and businesses. The turnout at both venues suggested that decentralised outreach continues to be an effective model for civic engagement in the town.
The collected revenue, amounting to more than ₹34 lakh, is expected to contribute to the municipality’s ongoing urban services, particularly waste management, road maintenance, and ward-level improvements. With increasing demands on civic services due to population growth and expanding residential areas, officials have said that timely revenue mobilisation plays a critical role in sustaining core functions. While routine collections continue throughout the year, special drives help address pending dues and remind citizens of statutory obligations.
The municipality has already scheduled the next round of the special drive for 29 November. This upcoming session will be held at Ward 6, with tax collection points set up at Khaitan Kalyana Mandapam in Junglighat and at the headquarters’ main office. Officials expect a similar or higher response as more residents become aware of the outreach programme. The administration has been issuing notifications and advisories urging residents to use these opportunities to settle their dues without last-minute rushes.
For residents, the special drive also serves as a platform to seek clarifications regarding assessments, pending amounts, and procedural requirements. Many taxpayers who attended the Ward 5 event were reported to have used the occasion to update records, verify property details, and understand revised guidelines issued under various municipal regulations. Officials present at the centres assisted in addressing discrepancies and ensuring smoother processing of payments.
Public participation in such initiatives, according to municipal staff, is critical for improving overall service delivery. Higher compliance helps the administration plan and implement ward-level works more efficiently, particularly those involving public health, drainage, and upkeep of community spaces. The municipality has been emphasising the link between tax contributions and the availability of quality civic services, aiming to reinforce cooperative governance practices.
The administration is expected to continue such special drives across other wards in the coming weeks, depending on the response and pending dues. Officials indicated that the decentralised approach has not only improved revenue but also strengthened civic interaction, helping residents raise concerns, update their information, and engage more actively with the municipality.
As Sri Vijaya Puram continues expanding its urban footprint, the municipality has reiterated that timely tax payments remain essential for maintaining infrastructure and delivering essential services. With the Ward 5 drive marking one of the stronger responses in recent months, the upcoming Ward 6 campaign is anticipated to carry forward the momentum in community participation and revenue mobilisation.
