The Department of Agriculture has commenced the sale of chemical fertilisers through its network of Agriculture Sub-Depots across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, making subsidised inputs available to farmers under the Union Territory plan scheme.
According to the department, fertilisers are being supplied to farmers at subsidised rates as per the approved assistance pattern, with distribution taking place through authorised sub-depots operated by the Agriculture Department. The initiative is aimed at ensuring timely access to quality fertilisers for the farming community, particularly ahead of key agricultural operations.
Officials have advised farmers to procure fertilisers exclusively from authorised Agriculture Sub-Depots and not to purchase inputs from unauthorised dealers or illegal sources. The department cautioned that fertilisers sold outside the authorised system may be substandard, posing risks to crop health, soil fertility and human safety.

The advisory comes amid concerns over the circulation of unauthorised agricultural inputs, which can adversely affect productivity and undermine sustainable farming practices. By routing fertiliser distribution through departmental sub-depots, authorities aim to maintain quality control and ensure that subsidies reach intended beneficiaries.
The department has also issued a warning regarding the illegal sale of chemical fertilisers, stating that strict action will be initiated under the Fertilizer Control Order (FCO), 1985, if violations are detected. Enforcement measures are intended to deter unauthorised trading and safeguard farmer interests.
Officials emphasised that the use of certified fertilisers supplied through official channels is critical for maintaining soil health and achieving balanced crop nutrition. They noted that improper or counterfeit fertilisers can lead to long-term degradation of agricultural land, reduced yields and increased input costs for farmers.
As part of the advisory, farmers have been encouraged to contact their nearest Agriculture Sub-Depot or Zonal Agriculture Office for information related to fertiliser availability, pricing and recommended usage. Guidance is also available through the Kisan Call Centre to assist farmers in making informed decisions regarding nutrient management.
The department reiterated its appeal to the farming community to support sustainable agricultural development by ensuring that fertilisers are sourced responsibly and applied as per recommended practices. Officials indicated that awareness efforts would continue to inform farmers about authorised supply channels and regulatory safeguards.
The subsidised fertiliser distribution programme is positioned as part of broader efforts to strengthen agricultural productivity in the islands while ensuring regulatory compliance and environmental sustainability.
