The Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council has announced immediate water rationing measures for commercial establishments to address the ongoing water scarcity and ensure equitable distribution among residents. The decision follows a detailed review of water availability and consumption patterns in the town.
Commercial entities, including hotels, restaurants, and other business premises, will now receive controlled water supply starting February 24, 2026. The measure is aimed at conserving the limited water resources while maintaining essential domestic supply for households across the municipality.
The council reached the decision after consultations with key stakeholders, including representatives from the Andaman Chamber of Commerce. Officials emphasized that the rationing system is temporary and will continue until the water situation stabilizes and normal supply can be restored.
Authorities have urged commercial establishments to cooperate fully and implement internal water-saving measures. Businesses are encouraged to adopt efficient usage practices, minimize wastage, and support the council’s efforts to manage the crisis responsibly.
The rationing initiative reflects a coordinated approach to resource management amid prolonged water stress, balancing the needs of both commercial operations and residential users. By prioritizing household consumption, the council aims to safeguard public welfare while mitigating the impact of limited water resources on essential services.
Residents and business owners have been called upon to exercise caution, adhere to the new allocation schedules, and actively participate in conservation measures. Officials highlighted that proactive public cooperation will be crucial in managing the current water scarcity effectively.
The council reiterated that the measures are precautionary and designed to prevent severe shortages. While commercial activities may experience temporary restrictions, the overarching goal is to maintain steady domestic water supply and reduce the long-term impact on the town’s water infrastructure.
With water scarcity emerging as a pressing concern in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, municipal authorities continue to monitor supply levels closely and adjust distribution policies as required. The proactive engagement of both businesses and residents is expected to play a pivotal role in navigating the ongoing water crisis.
