Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council Launches Water Conservation and Supply Management Drive

Amid rising demand for potable water, the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council has launched a citywide campaign aimed at reducing water loss and strengthening supply management. Titled “Stop the Leakage, Save Water,” the initiative focuses on identifying leakages in the distribution network while encouraging residents to adopt responsible water-use practices.

Water conservation has been flagged as a priority by the civic body, particularly in the context of ensuring equitable and reliable supply across households. The campaign seeks to address avoidable losses in the system while promoting long-term sustainability in urban water management.

As part of the drive, special inspection teams have been constituted in coordination with the Andaman Public Works Department to conduct ward-wise checks of water supply pipelines within municipal limits. These teams are tasked with identifying leakages, overflow points and other faults in the distribution system. Repairs and maintenance works are being undertaken by the concerned sections to minimise wastage and improve efficiency.

Alongside technical interventions, the campaign places emphasis on public participation. Residents have been urged to routinely inspect household plumbing, repair leaking taps and pipes, and prevent overflow from overhead tanks. Pamphlets outlining practical dos and don’ts related to water conservation are being distributed across the city to raise awareness and encourage behavioural change.

The municipal council has also advised households and establishments to install float valves in overhead tanks to automatically regulate water flow and prevent overflow, a measure expected to significantly reduce daily water loss. Officials indicated that cooperation from residential, institutional and commercial users will be critical for the success of the campaign.

To strengthen responsiveness, citizens have been requested to report instances of water leakage, burst pipelines, overflow or misuse to designated control rooms. Complaints within municipal areas can be reported to the Municipal Control Room, while issues in rural areas can be communicated to the APWD Water Control Room through designated contact numbers. Both control rooms are functioning round the clock to facilitate timely action.

The council has reiterated that water conservation is a shared responsibility and has called on the public to actively support the campaign. By combining infrastructure checks with citizen engagement, the initiative aims to build a more water-secure and sustainable Sri Vijaya Puram.
