Sri Vijaya Puram Activates Speed Cameras; Over-Speeding Can Cost Motorists ₹3,000

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, October 10: Speed violation detection cameras installed at various locations in Sri Vijaya Puram are now operational and will automatically capture vehicles exceeding prescribed speed limits, with offenders facing fines of up to ₹3,000 and possible suspension of their driving licences for three months.

The system will enforce category-specific speed limits prescribed within municipal limits under a notification issued by the Deputy Commissioner of the District of Andamans on November 23, 2001. The limits range from 25 km/h for auto-rickshaws to 40 km/h for light motor vehicles and heavy goods vehicles, including passenger buses.

Under the prescribed limits, scooters, motorcycles and mopeds must not exceed 35 km/h. Light motor vehicles, heavy goods vehicles and passenger buses have a maximum speed limit of 40 km/h, while auto-rickshaws must remain within 25 km/h.

The automated cameras will detect and capture vehicles travelling above these limits. Authorities will process recorded violations for enforcement action in accordance with the law.

The penalties specified for over-speeding include a fine of ₹1,500 for light motor vehicles and ₹3,000 for medium and heavy vehicles. Violators may also face suspension of their driving licences for three months.

The activation of the cameras places greater emphasis on compliance with existing speed restrictions across the municipal area. Motorists have been advised to observe the limits applicable to their vehicles rather than treating them as optional guidance.

Speeding can reduce a driver’s ability to respond to sudden movements by pedestrians and other vehicles, as well as unexpected road hazards. It can also lead to loss of vehicle control and collisions, potentially causing serious injuries or fatalities.

The advisory cautions that attempting to save a few minutes by driving faster can have lasting consequences, including road crashes, permanent disability and loss of life, apart from financial penalties and legal action.

The speed limits were prescribed through Notification No. 4/27/DS/90/4460 dated November 23, 2001, issued by the Deputy Commissioner, District of Andamans. The current camera-based system will automatically detect vehicles exceeding those established limits, while the recorded violations will be taken up under the applicable legal process.

Motorists across Sri Vijaya Puram are therefore required to follow the speed limit corresponding to their vehicle category as the detection system becomes operational at locations across the city.
