A pregnant woman and her husband were injured after a Maruti Omni van collided with their scooter near the High Court in Sri Vijaya Puram this afternoon, with eyewitnesses alleging rash driving and possible intoxication by the van driver.
According to witnesses present at the scene, the van was travelling from the opposite direction when it struck the scooter carrying the couple. Following the initial impact, the vehicle reportedly veered off course and crashed into a wall on the left side of the road before coming to a halt.
The male rider sustained serious injuries in the collision, including a fractured arm and multiple wounds across his body. His wife, who was riding pillion and is reportedly pregnant, also suffered injuries. Both were immediately shifted to a medical facility for evaluation and treatment.
Medical authorities have confirmed that the husband’s injuries are severe. However, the condition of the pregnant woman and the status of the unborn child remain under medical assessment. Doctors are conducting further examinations to determine the full extent of her injuries.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the van driver was driving in a rash and negligent manner at the time of the accident. Several bystanders also claimed that the driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. There has been no official confirmation regarding these allegations so far.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities are expected to conduct medical and forensic examinations, including a blood alcohol content test of the van driver, as part of the inquiry. Officials have stated that confirmation on intoxication, if any, will depend on the results of these tests.
Investigators are examining the sequence of events leading up to the crash and recording statements from eyewitnesses. A detailed medical report on the injured couple is also awaited.
The incident has raised concerns over road safety in the High Court area of Sri Vijaya Puram. Further information is expected once the police complete their preliminary investigation and medical assessments are finalised.
