SP holds public hearing in Billiground on drug abuse

The Superintendent of Police (SP) of North & Middle Andaman District, Shweta K. Sugathan, IPS, held a Jan Sunvai (public hearing) at Hari Nagar Panchayat Hall in Billiground on Monday, addressing the grievances of local residents and raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.

Around 120 people from different sections of the community, including local leaders, women, senior citizens, and youth,  participated actively in the session, according to an official press release by the North & Middle Andaman District Police. Residents voiced a wide range of concerns covering law enforcement, traffic management, public safety, and women and child protection.

Each grievance was heard patiently by Sugathan, who provided immediate responses wherever possible and assured timely action. The open dialogue, according to participants, strengthened trust between the police and the local community, reinforcing the spirit of transparency and collaboration.

Following the grievance redressal, the SP conducted an awareness session on the growing threat of drug abuse in the islands. She stressed that drug addiction not only destroys individual lives but also weakens the social fabric of communities. Sugathan urged citizens to stay vigilant and report any suspicious drug-related activities to the police, promising strict confidentiality and rewards for credible information.

Police have requested the public to share any crime-related tips through phone numbers 100, 112, and 03192-273344. The identity of informers will be kept confidential, authorities reassured.

The North & Middle Andaman District Police reiterated their commitment to maintaining a strong partnership with the public to ensure a safer, drug-free society. Events like these, according to the district police, are part of a wider community policing initiative to foster grassroots participation in maintaining law and order.
