A series of awareness sessions promoting soyameal as a complete protein alternative was recently organized at the AYUSH Hospital in Sri Vijaya Puram, drawing participation from patients, relatives, and health staff. The programme, conducted under the supervision of the Deputy Director of AYUSH, aimed to highlight the nutritional value of soyameal and encourage its inclusion in daily diets for improved health outcomes.
The initiative began with an interactive session for inpatients of the hospital on August 16, during which medical officers from various disciplines emphasized the importance of soyameal in addressing dietary protein requirements. Patients were informed about the food’s role in supporting overall health, particularly its impact on heart health, bone strength, glucose metabolism, and immunity. Informative handbills were distributed to provide accessible knowledge on how soyameal can be integrated into routine meals.
Doctors engaged with participants to explain the multiple ways soyameal can serve as a cost-effective and nutritious alternative to traditional protein sources. Recipes were shared to demonstrate its versatility and ease of preparation, making it a practical option for families. The session also highlighted soyameal’s rich content of protein, essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals, underlining its capacity to serve as a sustainable solution for meeting nutritional needs.
A separate programme was organized at the hospital’s OPD complex, attracting outpatients and their families. This session reiterated soyameal’s health benefits, especially in promoting long-term wellness through balanced nutrition. Participants were encouraged to consider soyameal not only as a dietary supplement but also as a preventive health measure, capable of reducing risks associated with lifestyle diseases.
In addition to the hospital programmes, an awareness drive was conducted for participants of yoga classes at the hospital’s Yoga Hall. The session was followed by a yoga practice, reinforcing the concept of holistic wellness by combining dietary awareness with physical activity. The integrated approach of yoga and nutrition emphasized that overall health can be effectively supported through conscious lifestyle choices.
Across all three sessions, more than 105 individuals took part. Patients, caregivers, and staff interacted actively, asking questions and sharing experiences about dietary practices. This level of participation reflected the growing curiosity among the community regarding plant-based protein sources and their potential role in everyday health management.
The awareness drive was part of a larger national initiative by the Government of India to popularize soyameal as a viable protein option across different sections of society. By focusing on hospitals and community-based wellness programmes, the initiative seeks to encourage behavioral changes that can contribute to better health outcomes on a wider scale.
Soyameal has long been recognized globally as a rich source of nutrition. With increasing interest in vegetarian and plant-based diets, the campaign resonates with current dietary trends and scientific recommendations advocating for diverse protein intake. For island communities like those in Andaman and Nicobar, awareness of affordable and accessible protein alternatives is particularly relevant, given the logistical challenges of ensuring a steady supply of varied food items.
The active role of AYUSH medical officers in promoting soyameal reflects a growing focus on preventive healthcare. Instead of solely addressing illnesses after they arise, such initiatives aim to reduce the incidence of health issues by encouraging healthier eating habits and balanced nutrition. By linking food choices with long-term wellness, the programme sought to empower individuals to take more responsibility for their health.
The soyameal awareness campaign at AYUSH Hospital concluded with a clear message that dietary practices can significantly influence health and wellbeing. With community participation, educational outreach, and integration with holistic practices like yoga, the initiative has laid the groundwork for broader acceptance of soyameal as a reliable protein source. As the campaign continues, it is expected that more households will incorporate soyameal into their diets, contributing to healthier communities in the islands.
