The Health Department has initiated a district-wide expansion of preventive and wellness services in South Andaman, with the operationalisation of Non-Communicable Disease clinics across health facilities and the introduction of regular yoga sessions aimed at promoting physical and mental well-being. The measures are being implemented under the National Health Mission as part of efforts to strengthen comprehensive healthcare delivery.
NCD clinics are being made functional in all 56 health facilities across the district, covering one district hospital, one community health centre, five urban health centres, ten primary health centres and 39 sub-centres functioning as Ayushman Arogya Mandirs. The initiative is intended to support early screening, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up care and lifestyle modification for common non-communicable diseases.
Officials indicated that strengthening NCD services is a key component of the Ayushman Arogya Mandir framework, which seeks to shift healthcare delivery towards prevention and long-term disease management. The clinics are expected to play a critical role in addressing lifestyle-related health conditions through regular monitoring and patient engagement.
Alongside clinical services, the District Health Society, in coordination with the Directorate of Health Services under the AYUSH component, has planned the launch of structured yoga sessions across South Andaman from March 2026. The sessions will be held twice a week and are designed to encourage community participation in wellness activities.
Weekend yoga sessions will be conducted at Panchayat Bhawans and community halls across the district, while weekly sessions will be organised at all health centres and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs. In addition, yoga sessions will be held at the AYUSH Hospital throughout the week at designated morning and evening hours.
The programme aims to integrate physical activity and mental health practices into routine healthcare outreach. By combining NCD screening with wellness initiatives such as yoga, the department intends to promote healthier lifestyles and reduce long-term disease burden.
Local body representatives have been consulted in preparing the schedule of sessions to ensure accessibility and community involvement. The sessions will be conducted at multiple locations across urban and rural areas, covering islands and habitations throughout South Andaman.
Members of the public have been encouraged to participate actively in the sessions and make use of services available at their nearest health centres. Authorities indicated that grievances or queries related to the programme can be addressed through health centres or district-level contact points.
The combined rollout of NCD clinics and yoga sessions reflects a preventive healthcare approach, with officials emphasising sustained participation and awareness as key to improving overall health outcomes in the district.
