South Andaman Hosts Inter-School Girls’ Football Tourney to Promote Gender Inclusion

The Sports Section of the District Education Office (DEO), South Andaman, is conducting an inter-school football knockout tournament for girls under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative, aiming to foster gender inclusion in sports and promote physical activity among young girls. The tournament, which includes teams from both primary and secondary schools in the South Andaman Educational Zone, is currently underway at two venues, GSS Junglighat School Ground and Bhatubasti School Ground.

On July 26, four semifinal matches were held at the Bhatubasti School Ground, featuring spirited performances from both primary and secondary level girls’ teams. In the secondary girls’ category, Government Demonstration Multipurpose School (GDMS) narrowly defeated GSSS School Line with a score of 2-1. Meanwhile, GSSS Girls dominated SSS KV I with an overwhelming 5-0 win. In the primary girls’ segment, GMS Humfrygunj edged out GMSSS Aberdeen in a closely contested match ending 5-4, while GSSS Prothrapur outplayed GSSS Garacharma with a clean 3-0 finish.

These results have now set the stage for the final matches in both categories, scheduled for July 28 at Bhatubasti School Ground. The finals are expected to draw enthusiastic crowds comprising parents, teachers, education officials, and local sports enthusiasts. The competition has sparked excitement among students and reinforced the significance of school-level sports as a tool for empowerment.

The tournament is being organized with the active support of school principals and physical education teachers, who are overseeing the matches and guiding young athletes. Officials from the DEO have emphasized that such events provide valuable exposure and instill confidence in girl students, many of whom are participating in a structured sports competition for the first time.

The initiative under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is particularly significant in the context of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where promoting education and well-being for girls is a key developmental priority. By encouraging girls to engage in physical activities such as football, the administration aims to challenge gender stereotypes and provide equal opportunities in education and extracurricular fields.

Participation in the tournament has been robust, with multiple schools sending in their best teams, reflecting growing interest in girls’ sports. Teachers and coaches have noted remarkable improvements in coordination, stamina, and confidence among the players since the tournament began. Several young players have emerged as standout performers, earning praise for their agility, strategy, and sportsmanship.

Apart from physical benefits, the football tournament has also been instrumental in strengthening interpersonal skills and team spirit among participants. Students are learning to work collaboratively, manage wins and losses, and maintain discipline on the field, qualities that extend beyond sports and contribute to their overall development.

Local authorities and education department representatives have visited the matches to boost morale and observe the progress of the event. Many have expressed satisfaction with the turnout and competitiveness displayed by the teams. Discussions are also underway to explore ways to integrate such tournaments into the academic calendar on a more regular basis.

Parents of participating girls have expressed pride in seeing their daughters take active roles in public sports events, with many sharing that the experience has helped boost their children’s self-esteem. The final match is expected to be a highlight of the tournament, with anticipation running high among school communities.

With the success of this edition, the DEO South Andaman is now looking into expanding the format to include additional sports such as athletics, volleyball, and kho-kho for girls across the educational zones. This initiative reflects a broader vision of nurturing talent, fostering inclusivity, and building a healthier future for the younger generation.

The girls’ football tournament is not just about competition, it is a celebration of empowerment, resilience, and the breaking of barriers. It sends a powerful message across the islands that girls belong not just in classrooms but on sports fields as well.
