South Andaman Cultural Competition: Folk Beats And Young Voices Light Up District Stage

The South Andaman District came alive with creativity and performance as the District Level National Role Play and Folk Dance Competition for 2025-26 concluded at the Girls’ Government Senior Secondary School Auditorium in Sri Vijaya Puram. The event brought together students from across the district, offering them a platform to showcase their artistic talent while celebrating cultural diversity.

Deputy Education Officer Gyan Sheel Dubey inaugurated the competition as chief guest, encouraging students to embrace creativity and actively participate in cultural activities alongside academics. His presence reflected the Administration’s commitment to nurturing holistic development in schools by providing opportunities for expression beyond the classroom.

The competition featured a blend of folk dance performances and role plays, enabling participants to highlight not only their artistic flair but also their ability to communicate stories, traditions, and social messages. Folk dance, rooted in cultural identity, has long been recognised as a means of preserving heritage, while role plays offer an avenue for students to develop communication skills, confidence, and an understanding of contemporary issues.

Students from various schools participated enthusiastically, each bringing unique interpretations to the stage. Colourful costumes, rhythmic choreography, and lively music created an atmosphere of celebration and learning. At the same time, role play performances highlighted social themes, showcasing students’ capacity to blend creativity with awareness.

The competition concluded with two schools emerging as winners. PM SHRI Government Senior Secondary School, R K Pur, and Government Senior Secondary School, Model Aberdeen, secured top honours, reflecting their strong preparation and commitment to cultural engagement. Their recognition served as encouragement for other schools to further invest in cultural training and support for students.

Beyond the winning performances, the event underscored the broader purpose of the competition, to encourage participation and create a sense of community among schools in the district. By bringing students together on a single platform, the event fostered mutual learning, appreciation for diverse talent, and the importance of teamwork.

They play a significant role in shaping student personalities by building self-confidence, enhancing stage presence, and cultivating communication skills. For schools in South Andaman, the annual cultural competition serves as both a celebration and a developmental exercise.

The role of cultural competitions in education has been steadily recognised in recent years, particularly under initiatives that stress holistic learning. While academics remain central, exposure to arts and culture allows students to develop well-rounded personalities. Participation in folk dance and role play contests also contributes to preserving cultural traditions and passing them on to younger generations in engaging ways.

For South Andaman’s schools, the event was also an opportunity to showcase the results of dedicated training by teachers and mentors. Behind each performance lay weeks of practice and preparation, highlighting the support provided by schools to nurture student potential. Parents and educators in attendance lauded the initiative, noting that such competitions bring out hidden talents and inspire students to pursue arts alongside academics.

The conclusion of the district-level competition also marks the beginning of the next stage for winners, who are likely to represent South Andaman at higher levels. Success at the district level often opens the door to regional or national platforms, offering students broader exposure and recognition.

In a district known for its vibrant cultural fabric and diversity, the National Role Play and Folk Dance Competition once again reinforced the importance of keeping traditions alive while encouraging innovation. By blending artistic performance with social themes, the students demonstrated that cultural expression remains a powerful medium of both celebration and education.

As the curtains came down on the event, the applause and enthusiasm underscored the growing recognition of cultural competitions as integral to education in South Andaman. The winners’ achievements were celebrated, but the real takeaway lay in the collective spirit of participation, creativity, and the determination to carry forward cultural heritage through the voices of the young.
