Vehicular movement along National Highway-04 in South Andaman has been temporarily rerouted following safety concerns over the new Sippighat Minor Bridge. Authorities said the structure’s wearing coat has suffered damage and requires immediate rectification and reinforcement. As a precautionary measure, the South Andaman District administration has ordered the diversion of all vehicles via the older existing Sippighat Minor Bridge located at Km 23.150.
The decision was taken by the District Magistrate using powers under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and in accordance with the Administration’s earlier notifications. The new diversion comes into effect from June 25, 2025, and will remain in force until further orders. The move is aimed at ensuring public safety and preventing any structural mishap while the bridge undergoes assessment and potential repair work.
Relevant departments, enforcement agencies, and transport operators have been directed to strictly comply with the order. No timeline has been issued for the completion of the bridge’s strengthening, though officials are expected to monitor progress closely and issue further updates as required.
This route along NH-04 is a vital stretch for both passenger and cargo movement in the South Andaman region, linking urban and rural pockets. Any disruption or redirection of traffic on this corridor has a ripple effect on commute times and logistics services. While the alternative route via the older bridge is operational, the long-term structural viability of that bridge has not been elaborated on by authorities.
Transport operators and daily commuters have been advised to plan their travel accordingly and cooperate with enforcement personnel managing the traffic redirection. It is expected that vehicles will experience some delay, particularly during peak hours, due to the reduced carrying capacity of the older bridge.
Meanwhile, a separate public safety alert has been issued by the district administration regarding scheduled artillery practice at the Baffle Range for South Andaman. The notification, issued under the Manoeuvres, Field Firing and Artillery Practice Act of 1938, warns the general public to avoid the area on June 26, 2025. Live firing exercises will take place in three sessions between 0930 hrs and 1930 hrs on the specified date.
Residents and travellers have been asked to keep away from the firing range and avoid entering the zone with vehicles or livestock. No civilian access will be permitted during these hours. The notice aims to prevent accidents and ensure that field operations are conducted without obstruction.
