Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty has announced that her Bandra restaurant, Bastian, will shut down on Thursday, marking the end of one of Mumbai’s most talked-about dining destinations. The decision comes at a time when Shetty and her husband Raj Kundra face ongoing legal troubles, including allegations of financial fraud filed with the Mumbai Police’s Economic Offences Wing.
In a social media note to her followers, Shetty described the closure as the end of an era. “This Thursday marks the end of an era as we bid farewell to one of Mumbai’s most iconic destinations, BASTIAN BANDRA. A venue that gave us countless memories, unforgettable nights, and moments that shaped the city’s nightlife now takes its final bow,” she wrote.
Shetty added that a special farewell event will be organised for loyal patrons. “To honour this legendary space, we’re curating a very special evening for our closest patrons, a night filled with nostalgia, energy, and magic, celebrating everything Bastian has stood for one last time,” she shared. While announcing the shutdown of Bastian Bandra, she also confirmed that the weekly event Arcane Affair would continue at Bastian at the Top, which she described as the next chapter in the brand’s journey.
The Bandra outlet of Bastian was co-owned by Shetty and restaurateur Ranjit Bindra. It first opened in 2016 and became popular for its contemporary cuisine, celebrity clientele and distinctive interior design. The restaurant was relocated and relaunched in Bandra in 2023, continuing its reputation as a high-profile destination for Mumbai’s elite.
The closure, however, comes amid difficult times for Shetty and Kundra. Earlier this year, the couple was booked by the Economic Offences Wing for allegedly defrauding a Mumbai-based businessman of INR 60.4 crore. Businessman Deepak Kothari accused them of misusing funds provided between 2015 and 2023, allegedly given in the name of business expansion. He claimed that the money was instead diverted towards personal expenses. The case is now under investigation by the EOW.
The allegations added to Kundra’s troubled history with financial controversies, though both he and Shetty have denied wrongdoing in past cases. The fresh complaint has once again brought scrutiny on their business ventures at a time when Shetty remains active in the entertainment industry and entrepreneurial projects.
Bastian Bandra’s closure has triggered a wave of nostalgia among Mumbai’s social circles, where the restaurant has often served as a backdrop for parties, celebrity gatherings and nightlife events. Known for its creative food presentation and eclectic decor, the venue earned a reputation as a landmark in the city’s hospitality scene. Its Thursday night ritual Arcane Affair was a highlight for regulars, blending fine dining with a nightclub atmosphere.
While the Bandra outlet is closing, Shetty emphasised that the Bastian brand would continue through its sister property, Bastian at the Top. Located in another part of Mumbai, the restaurant aims to carry forward the legacy with new experiences and curated events, keeping loyal patrons engaged despite the transition.
The development illustrates the turbulence faced by celebrity-led ventures, where personal controversies can quickly impact public perception and business fortunes. Despite the challenges, the Bastian brand remains one of Shetty’s most recognisable entrepreneurial undertakings.
As Bastian Bandra hosts its final night this week, it leaves behind nearly a decade-long imprint on Mumbai’s dining and nightlife culture. For Shetty, the closure signals both an end and a new beginning, as she looks to steer the brand into fresh territory while navigating personal and legal challenges.
