Nation Remembers Savitribai Phule for Social Reform and Education

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid homage to social reformer Savitribai Phule on her birth anniversary, commemorating her pioneering efforts in women’s education and social reform.

Born in 1831, Savitribai Phule is recognised as India’s first female teacher of modern times. Married at the age of 10 to social activist Jyotirao Phule, she played a pivotal role alongside her husband in promoting education for girls and advocating women’s rights in Maharashtra. Her work continues to inspire social reform initiatives across India.

In a post on X, PM Modi highlighted her transformative contributions, stating, “On the birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule, we remember a pioneer whose life was devoted to societal transformation through education and service. She stood for equality, justice and compassion.” He added that Savitribai viewed education as a powerful instrument for social change and dedicated her life to uplifting vulnerable communities through knowledge.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute via social media, describing her as an inspiration for nation-building. Shah said, “On the birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule, the pioneer of women’s education and social reform, I offer millions of salutations. She gave a new direction to women’s empowerment by linking it to the fundamental right to education.” He further noted that her establishment of India’s first girls’ school and her efforts against social evils remain a guiding light for the country.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath honoured her legacy, calling her a symbol of social change and human dignity. In a post on X, he said, “‘Krantijyoti’ Savitribai Phule ignited the flame of education, equality, and women’s rights through courage, struggle, and foresight. Her life remains an emblem of empowerment and societal reform.”

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also paid homage, describing Savitribai as a “symbol of women’s power and the pioneer of social reform.” CM Gupta highlighted her perseverance against conservative societal norms and her efforts to combat untouchability, gender discrimination, and social inequality. She added, “Savitribai Phule’s dedication to empowering deprived and marginalized communities through education is unparalleled. Her journey of social transformation will continue to inspire generations.”

The commemorations across the nation underscored Savitribai Phule’s enduring legacy in advancing women’s education and challenging societal inequities. Her contributions continue to resonate in India’s educational landscape and remain a benchmark for social reform and empowerment initiatives.
