Youth, Officials Join Unity March in Mayabunder Honouring Patel’s Legacy

The 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was commemorated in Mayabunder with a unity-themed programme that brought together youth, students, and officials in tribute to the Iron Man of India. The event, jointly organized by Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat) and the District Administration of North and Middle Andaman, sought to celebrate Patel’s enduring legacy of national integration and unity.

The day began with a padyatra, or Unity March, from Danapur Junction to the Mini Stadium at Mayabunder Bazaar. Hundreds of participants, including school and college students, government officials, and members of the public, took part with visible enthusiasm, holding placards and banners that highlighted Patel’s vision of a united India.

Assistant Commissioner of Mayabunder, S. Krishna Chaitanya, graced the occasion as the chief guest, while DFO Mayabunder, Lata Hedge Prasad, attended as guest of honour. The programme opened with the administration of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ pledge, where participants reaffirmed their commitment to building a self-reliant and united nation.

Following the march, dignitaries paid floral tributes to a portrait of Sardar Patel, and the gathering joined together to sing Vande Mataram in honour of India’s national song. The event resonated with patriotic fervour, emphasizing Patel’s pivotal role in unifying the country after Independence and his contribution as India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister.

The commemorative programme also featured a cultural showcase by students from Mahatma Gandhi Government College, who presented performances on themes of patriotism, unity, and social harmony. Their vibrant displays drew applause from the audience, reinforcing the message of solidarity and civic duty.

To recognize active participation in the pre-event activities, prizes and certificates were distributed to winners of essay writing, quiz competitions, elocution contests, health camps, and cleanliness drives. These activities were conducted in the lead-up to the anniversary to engage youth and promote values of discipline, self-reliance, and national pride.

In his welcome address, Mera Yuva Bharat’s Joint Director, Sukharanjan Biswas, highlighted the significance of the occasion, noting that the commemoration was not only a remembrance of Patel’s birth but also an opportunity to rekindle the spirit of unity that he championed. The event concluded with a vote of thanks from K. Chithravelu, Pradhan of Mayabunder, who expressed appreciation to all departments, panchayats, and participants for their cooperation in making the event a success.

The unity march and its accompanying programmes were emblematic of the growing effort to engage youth in civic and nation-building activities. By involving educational institutions and local communities, the event extended Patel’s message of unity beyond ceremonial remembrance into active participation.

Officials observed that such events are essential to instilling a sense of collective responsibility and national pride among younger generations. The collaboration between Mera Yuva Bharat and the District Administration also underscored a broader goal, to encourage the islands’ youth to contribute to self-reliance and social cohesion through voluntary service, leadership, and community action.

The commemoration in Mayabunder thus went beyond homage, evolving into a platform for dialogue, reflection, and renewed commitment to the ideals of unity and progress envisioned by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel more than a century ago.
