Security Forces Gear Up for ‘Sagar Kavach’ Coastal Drill

Date:

In a major coordinated effort to strengthen maritime safety, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will witness a large-scale coastal security exercise titled ‘Sagar Kavach – SKV 02/25’, scheduled to take place from 6 a.m. on November 13 to 6 p.m. on November 14, 2025.

The biennial exercise, which involves multiple security and intelligence agencies, aims to test the operational readiness and coordination of coastal defense systems in the strategically significant island chain. During the two-day drill, participating units will simulate seaward intrusions and attacks on vital areas and points (VA/VPs) to evaluate real-time response mechanisms.

Authorities said the exercise will involve Red Force elements, teams that will mimic potential infiltrators attempting to breach coastal defenses. This mock intrusion will test the detection, interception, and neutralization capabilities of the joint forces, including the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Police, and other enforcement agencies stationed across the islands.

Officials emphasized that the drill is purely a simulation and urged the public not to panic if they notice increased security presence, naval activity, or mock operations near coastal areas during this period. “The general public’s cooperation is essential for the successful execution of this exercise,” officials added, noting that local fishermen and residents along the coast have been informed in advance.

The ‘Sagar Kavach’ series of exercises, conducted periodically along India’s coastline, play a vital role in identifying gaps in surveillance, communication, and inter-agency coordination. In the context of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, an area of growing geopolitical importance and dense maritime traffic, these drills are seen as critical steps toward maintaining robust coastal defense.

By simulating real-world challenges and potential threats, the exercise ensures that agencies remain vigilant, synchronized, and prepared to respond swiftly to any maritime security contingency.

The upcoming drill reaffirms India’s commitment to safeguarding its vast maritime frontiers, particularly in regions like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which serve as a key outpost for the nation’s maritime strategy.

As the ‘Sagar Kavach – SKV 02/25’ exercise unfolds over the next two days, the focus will remain on ensuring that the islands’ coastal defenses are fortified, tested, and ready to counter any emerging threats from the sea.
