A major boost to rural healthcare arrived in North and Middle Andaman last month as the newly constructed building at Dr. RP Hospital was formally handed over to the health authorities. The project, executed under the coordination of the District Administration, APWD, Electricity Department, and Directorate of Health Services, is part of a broader plan to improve access to quality healthcare for remote populations.
The upgraded facility was completed under the leadership of the Chief Secretary of the Andaman & Nicobar Administration and is being positioned as a step towards delivering accessible, equitable and patient-centric care. Officials expect the development to significantly enhance the quality, reach, and efficiency of medical services in the region.
Spread across multiple floors, the hospital’s design prioritises both functionality and patient comfort. The ground floor houses critical units such as the Labour Room, Labour Ward, Post-Operative Ward, Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU), Children’s Unit, and various other essential medical departments. Specialist services in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Paediatrics have been integrated to cater to patients across different age groups and medical needs.
Attention to patient convenience is evident in the facility’s amenities. Each ward has attached toilets to ensure hygiene and dignity, while a spacious waiting hall has been added for attendants and visitors. Mobility between floors is supported by both a lift and staircases, improving accessibility for patients, healthcare workers, and support staff.
On the first floor, separate wards for male, female, and paediatric patients have been set up, along with dedicated rooms for Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs). The second floor accommodates the Integrated Public Health Laboratory (IPHL), significantly expanding the hospital’s diagnostic and testing capabilities.
The inclusion of advanced laboratory services is expected to reduce delays in diagnosis and treatment, particularly in cases where swift medical decisions can be life-saving. The expansion also reflects a focus on comprehensive healthcare, from maternal and child health to general medicine and emergency services.
For rural communities in the North and Middle Andaman districts, access to such upgraded infrastructure could mean fewer referrals to distant facilities, shorter wait times, and more timely interventions. In a region where geography often challenges medical accessibility, the RP Hospital upgrade represents a strategic investment in both infrastructure and public health outcomes.
Officials say the facility is designed with long-term adaptability in mind, allowing for future expansions or technological upgrades as healthcare demands evolve. The emphasis on inclusive design and comprehensive services aligns with the Administration’s broader goal of improving healthcare equity across the islands.
With the handover now complete, the RP Hospital is expected to transition quickly into full-scale operations from the new building, offering patients a more efficient, comfortable, and modern healthcare experience while strengthening the region’s overall medical infrastructure.
