Ration card services across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will remain suspended for six days as the Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs undertakes a major technological upgrade. From July 19 to 24, all services related to ration card operations, including applications, modifications, and queries, will be unavailable due to the transition from the existing ePDS platform to the newer SMART PDS 2.0.
The migration is part of a broader effort to modernize the Public Distribution System in the Union Territory, with officials stating that the SMART PDS 2.0 will offer improved service delivery, transparency, and a more user-friendly interface. The initiative aligns with national-level reforms aimed at digitalizing welfare systems and reducing human intervention in essential service management.
Consumers across the islands have been advised to plan accordingly and avoid approaching rationing offices during the transition period. All in-person and online requests will be kept on hold until the full restoration of services post-migration. Authorities have assured that services will resume normally after July 24.
The SMART PDS 2.0 system is expected to integrate several new features including real-time stock monitoring, biometric verification for ration distribution, and automated grievance redressal mechanisms. Once the new platform is live, beneficiaries will be able to access services faster, reduce their reliance on manual paperwork, and eliminate duplication or discrepancies in the database.
The upgrade also reflects efforts to plug loopholes in the existing distribution chain and bring greater accountability across Fair Price Shops operating in urban and rural regions. One of the key highlights of the transition is its focus on ensuring data consistency across Aadhaar, ration card databases, and other welfare-linked digital systems.
While the disruption is temporary, the administration has acknowledged the inconvenience to beneficiaries, particularly in remote areas. However, it emphasized that the long-term benefits of the new system will outweigh the short-term pause in service. Civil Supplies officials are expected to conduct backend data verification during the blackout period to ensure a smooth transition once SMART PDS 2.0 goes live.
Though no alternative arrangements have been announced for urgent ration-related issues during the service suspension, local authorities have been directed to remain available to address grievances in exceptional cases.
Once operational, the SMART PDS 2.0 is also likely to support more advanced data analytics for policy-level decisions and targeting of government food security schemes. In addition, consumers may soon be able to track ration delivery in real time and file service feedback directly through integrated mobile and web platforms.
