Sri Vijaya Puram: On the occasion of Rahul Gandhi’s birthday, the Andaman & Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee (ANTCC) launched a compassion drive, distributing ration kits to underprivileged families in Sri Vijaya Puram on June 19. The gesture, intended to reflect the values of service and inclusion championed by the former Congress president, saw around 25 families benefit in Wards 03 and 04.
Led by TSG Bhasker, chairman of the ANTCC campaign committee, the initiative began with the distribution of ration kits to needy residents. The occasion coincided with a broader event organised by the Minority Department of ANTCC under the leadership of Saji Varghese. The outreach was held at the Islamic Guidance Centre in Goalgar, where a second set of ration kits was handed out to several more families.
Among the prominent participants were ANTCC President Rangalal Halder, ANTCC campaign chairman TSG Bhasker, and key office-bearers Saji Varghese and Imran Pratapgarhi representing the national Minority Department. Organisers spoke of the event as a reflection of Rahul Gandhi’s inclusive vision, designed to uplift the most vulnerable segments of society.
The distribution drew a heartfelt response from recipients, with many voicing gratitude for the support. Saji Varghese acknowledged the backing of senior officials and stressed the Minority Department’s commitment to continuing work for the welfare of all communities, based on service, harmony, and social justice.
The event underscores the growing role of political activism tied to social welfare, reflecting wider efforts by regional leaders to connect established public figures with tangible benefits on the ground. Through initiatives such as this, community leaders hope to reinforce the link between high-level politics and grassroots support, bringing visible aid to families in need while fostering collective goodwill.
Officials confirmed that the ration kits include essential food staples, intended to provide support over the coming weeks. The strategic timing on a leader’s birthday further served as both a symbolic tribute and a practical outreach effort, ensuring that celebrations reflect tangible societal impact.
With India preparing for several high-profile political events, including national elections, such outreach programmes are likely to increase. Local ANTCC leadership has already indicated plans to expand similar efforts across wards and rural areas, with future campaigns aligned around key public holidays and anniversaries.
