Puja Dispute Sparks Rangat Shutdown; Police Seek CCTV Footage Amid Conflicting Claims

Alleged misconduct during a puja has triggered unrest in Rangat, with shops shut, daily life disrupted and police probing rival versions of events.

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair), April 4: An alleged incident of misconduct during a puja in Rangat has snowballed into a shutdown-like situation in the North and Middle Andaman town, with protests erupting, shops remaining shut and police launching a probe amid sharply conflicting claims over what transpired.

The incident is alleged to have taken place on April 2 during a religious gathering. By Friday, tensions had escalated into a strike-like situation across Rangat, disrupting normal life as residents demanded answers over the disturbance at what had been expected to be a peaceful programme.

According to eyewitness accounts, the trouble began when a man allegedly stepped out of a nearby shop and started hurling abusive remarks at women attending the puja. Within moments, the situation is said to have escalated further, with claims that the individual turned aggressive, pushed women and triggered panic among those present.

The alleged disruption of the religious event has sparked anger in the area, particularly over claims that women were targeted and that order broke down suddenly during the gathering. Those present described scenes of confusion and distress as the situation unfolded rapidly.

However, clarity over the incident remains elusive.

The absence of immediate recorded evidence has left space for competing versions of events, with residents questioning why no clear footage has surfaced so far. That has fuelled speculation and uncertainty over who was actually responsible for the alleged verbal abuse and physical aggression.

A formal complaint submitted on April 3 to the Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Rangat, has further complicated the narrative. While the complaint reportedly confirms that abusive language was used during the programme, disturbing the peace and creating tension, it also raises doubts about the identity of the accused.

According to the complaint, the person initially believed to be responsible was present at the spot but may not have committed the act. Instead, it suggests that another individual could have carried out the alleged misconduct, even as suspicion fell on the wrong person.

That claim has added another layer of confusion to an already volatile situation and prompted calls for a careful and impartial inquiry.

Acting on the complaint, authorities have launched a probe and directed the investigating officer to secure CCTV footage from the area. The footage has reportedly been sought for the period from 2.30 pm on April 2 to 8 am on April 3 in an attempt to reconstruct the sequence of events and test the competing claims.

Police are expected to rely on the CCTV footage to establish whether the alleged verbal abuse and physical aggression did in fact occur, and to identify those involved, if any.

As the inquiry gathers pace, questions are also being raised over the lack of surveillance material and the delay in obtaining concrete evidence in a matter that has already triggered significant public unrest. Residents have called for stronger monitoring systems in public spaces to improve accountability and prevent similar incidents in future.

Amid the growing tension, the name of one individual, Rahul Singh, has surfaced in connection with the aftermath of the episode. While reports indicate that he was present at the location, there is no indication at this stage that he initiated the confrontation. Even so, his past associations have brought him under public scrutiny, making him a focal point in the controversy.

The uncertainty surrounding his role has deepened divisions in the town, with some residents urging restraint until the facts are established and others demanding swift action.

Meanwhile, the impact of the incident continues to be felt across Rangat. Shops have remained shut, services have been disrupted and daily life has been thrown off balance as residents await clarity on what exactly happened during the puja and who, if anyone, was responsible.

Local voices have called for transparency in the investigation, saying that establishing the truth is critical not only for accountability but also for restoring public confidence.

Officials have maintained that the investigation is continuing and that all angles are under examination, including the possibility that multiple individuals may have been involved and that there may have been mistaken identity.

With CCTV footage yet to be analysed and statements still being recorded, the coming days are likely to be crucial in determining how the incident unfolded. Until then, Rangat remains on edge, caught between public outrage and uncertainty over an episode that has rapidly escalated beyond the confines of a single religious gathering.
