In a crackdown on drug trafficking in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Rangat Police on Monday intercepted an illicit narcotics operation and seized approximately one kilogram of ganja from a suspect in the Janakpur area. Acting on a tip-off, the local police mobilized swiftly and executed a well-coordinated raid that culminated in the arrest of the accused.
The operation unfolded after credible intelligence was received and verified, prompting authorities to assemble a special team under the leadership of the SDPO, Rangat. The team included Inspector Mohd. Sameer, SHO, SI Abdul Sajeed, and a team of police constables. Crime scene forensics support was provided by K.P. Nasreen (SOCO), and two independent witnesses were present to ensure transparency during the search and seizure process.
Upon arrival at the location in Janakpur, the team waited for a pre-decided signal from the informer before intercepting the suspect. A personal search of the individual led to the discovery of around 1 kg of illegal ganja concealed in his possession. The substance was seized on the spot and sent for forensic analysis.
Interrogation of the accused revealed his direct involvement in the trafficking of narcotics. He reportedly confessed to possessing and planning to distribute the contraband in the local market. Based on his admission and evidence recovered at the scene, a case was registered under the provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985.
This latest bust is part of a larger crackdown by the North & Middle Andaman District Police, who have ramped up surveillance and enforcement efforts in recent months amid rising concerns over drug proliferation in the region. Law enforcement officials have reiterated their zero-tolerance policy toward narcotics and underscored the importance of community cooperation in curbing illegal activities.
The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Tip-offs can be shared anonymously via police helpline numbers 100, 112, or the local station at 03192-273344. Authorities have assured that the identity of informers will be kept confidential and may be eligible for rewards for actionable leads.
The case is now under investigation, with police examining links to broader trafficking networks and supply chains. As the probe deepens, the Rangat police have reaffirmed their commitment to creating a drug-free community, particularly in areas vulnerable to the influence of narcotics. Officials say sustained vigilance, intelligence gathering, and public awareness are key pillars in the ongoing battle against drugs in the archipelago.
