A comprehensive debate on ‘Operation Sindoor’ is scheduled in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. Anticipation is high that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may participate in the discussion, indicating the significance the government attaches to the issue of national security.
Key Cabinet ministers, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, are expected to contribute to the debate. The session aims to shed light on both the strategic and diplomatic aspects of India’s latest cross-border counter-terror operation, which was launched in May this year.
The Upper House discussion follows an intense session in the Lok Sabha on Monday. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh delivered the opening remarks in the Lower House, where he firmly warned Pakistan against any future provocations. “Let this be a clear message to those who support terror. India will respond decisively to any act of aggression,” Singh stated, drawing loud applause from the treasury benches.
Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 as India’s military response to the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people, including several tourists. The operation was a joint effort by the Indian Army, Air Force, and intelligence agencies. Its objective was to dismantle terror infrastructure across the border, particularly in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
According to Singh’s statement in the Lok Sabha, the Indian armed forces neutralized over 100 terrorists during the operation. In addition, nine terror-related infrastructure targets were destroyed through precision strikes. The Defence Minister emphasized that India would not tolerate cross-border terrorism and reiterated the government’s readiness to take decisive action to safeguard the nation’s security.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also addressed the Lok Sabha, focusing on the diplomatic side of India’s military action. He highlighted how India’s global outreach ensured international understanding and support for the operation. Jaishankar’s remarks underscored the role of diplomacy in reinforcing India’s strategic objectives on the global stage.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the speeches made by both Singh and Jaishankar, describing them as “insightful” and reflective of the strength and determination of a “New India.” He commended the professionalism and bravery displayed by the Indian armed forces during the operation.
As the Rajya Sabha prepares to take up the issue, the discussion is expected to provide additional insight into the execution, objectives, and outcomes of Operation Sindoor. The session will likely reinforce the government’s position on national security and its zero-tolerance approach to terrorism.
