Housing Scheme Gains Momentum with 200+ Applications in Sri Vijaya Puram

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban 2.0 housing scheme has begun drawing responses from residents in Sri Vijaya Puram, with the municipal council reporting that more than 200 applications have already been received under the programme.

Officials said the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council has undertaken a series of awareness campaigns to inform eligible residents about the housing scheme, which aims to expand access to affordable housing in urban areas. These efforts have included press outreach, installation of public hoardings and ward-level awareness camps designed to guide potential beneficiaries through the application process.

According to municipal authorities, a total of 214 applications have been submitted so far under the scheme, out of which 189 have already been verified. The verification process forms part of the screening mechanism used to determine eligibility before applicants can receive assistance under the housing initiative.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban 2.0 was launched by the Government of India on September 1, 2024, as a continuation and expansion of the country’s affordable housing programme. The scheme aims to provide all-weather pucca houses to one crore urban families across India over the next five years, with the broader goal of achieving housing access for economically vulnerable households.

The programme is structured around several implementation components designed to accommodate different housing needs. One of the primary components is Beneficiary-Led Construction, which provides financial assistance to eligible families from the Economically Weaker Section category to build new pucca houses on land they already own.

Under this component, beneficiaries are permitted to construct houses with a minimum carpet area of 30 square metres and a maximum of 45 square metres. The objective is to support low-income households in developing permanent housing with basic amenities.

Another component of the scheme is Affordable Housing in Partnership, under which public or private agencies construct affordable housing units that are later allotted to eligible beneficiaries from the Economically Weaker Section category. These housing units also typically fall within the 30 to 45 square metre carpet area range.

The programme further includes an Affordable Rental Housing component that promotes the development of rental accommodation for economically weaker and lower-income households. The initiative is intended to support groups such as urban migrants, industrial workers, construction labourers, working women and other sections of the urban poor who may require affordable rental housing options.

A fourth component of the scheme provides interest subsidies on housing loans through the Interest Subsidy Scheme. Eligible beneficiaries whose home loans have been sanctioned and disbursed after September 1, 2024, can receive subsidies based on their income category.

According to the eligibility criteria, households with annual incomes of up to ₹3 lakh fall under the Economically Weaker Section category, while those earning between ₹3 lakh and ₹6 lakh are classified as Lower Income Group beneficiaries. Households with incomes between ₹6 lakh and ₹9 lakh are considered part of the Middle Income Group under the scheme.

Authorities have clarified that applicants must not own a pucca house anywhere in India in order to qualify for benefits under PMAY-Urban 2.0. In addition, individuals who have received housing assistance under any central, state, union territory or local government scheme during the past twenty years are not eligible to apply.

Applicants are also required to integrate Aadhaar or Aadhaar Virtual ID details into their application records, a measure aimed at improving verification and transparency in the beneficiary selection process.

Officials said the scheme also prioritises vulnerable groups, including widows, single women, persons with disabilities, senior citizens, transgender persons and individuals from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and minority communities. Other groups receiving priority consideration include street vendors identified under the PM SVANidhi scheme, artisans associated with the PM Vishwakarma programme, anganwadi workers and construction workers.

Residents can apply through the official PMAY-Urban portal by completing online registration and submitting the necessary documents such as Aadhaar details and income proof. Ward-level camps organised by the municipal council are also assisting residents who may need help with the digital application process.

Once submitted and verified, the status of each application can be tracked online, while the names of verified applicants are also displayed on local notice boards to maintain transparency.

Municipal officials said continued outreach efforts are expected to encourage more eligible households in Sri Vijaya Puram to apply for housing assistance under the scheme in the coming months.
